Jorma Taccone, known for his work with The Lonely Island and the Saturday Night Live character MacGruber, is currently promoting his new film, Over Your Dead Body. The movie is a darkly funny thriller about a couple who both independently decide to murder each other while on a getaway to a secluded spot. He recently spoke with MovieWeb about the Norwegian thriller remake.
Bill Hader, along with Will Forte and John Solomon, created the character MacGruber as a spoof of action heroes from 1980s and 90s TV shows like MacGyver, known for its resourceful protagonist. The character started as popular sketches on Saturday Night Live and eventually became a feature film in 2010, joining a small group of SNL creations like Wayne’s World and A Night at the Roxbury to make the jump to the big screen. Although the movie wasn’t a huge box office success – it earned $9.3 million worldwide on a $10 million budget – it has since developed a dedicated fan base. People appreciate its silly and often immature humor, and many consider it a hidden comedic treasure.
Despite the first movie’s disappointing box office performance, MacGruber got a short-lived TV series on Peacock in 2021, but that wasn’t renewed either. However, dedicated fans are still hoping to see the character return, especially since MacGruber recently appeared on Saturday Night Live. Interestingly, director and co-creator Jorma Taccone actually proposed multiple sequel ideas, but Netflix passed on the concept that eventually became the Peacock series. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Taccone shared details about those MacGruber sequel ideas, explaining that:
I developed a script for a potential MacGruber 2 movie and presented it directly to Ted Sarandos at Netflix. Unfortunately, they decided not to move forward with it, which was really frustrating because I thought it was a fantastic idea. I even ran into him at an awards show afterward. While the movie didn’t happen, we did end up creating a TV series based on the concept, which you can find on Peacock. It stars Sam Elliott and Lawrence Fishburne, and both of them are absolutely fantastic in it.
The Peacock series wasn’t Taccone’s first attempt at a MacGruber sequel. He also pitched a story inspired by the action movie Speed, starring Keanu Reeves. Although that idea didn’t get made either, Taccone joked that he’s open to turning it into a Broadway musical. He explained that…
I actually wrote a follow-up story that was similar to the movie Speed – it involved getting from one place to another before time ran out. But my team wasn’t interested in that idea at all. Honestly, I’d rather turn it into a Broadway musical. I think dramatic songs about the dark impulse to hurt people would be amazing.
While there aren’t any confirmed plans for a MacGruber 2 right now, the comedy’s future isn’t necessarily over. The original movie didn’t do well in theaters, but it surprisingly led to a popular TV series. Even if a sequel or new series doesn’t happen, MacGruber could always reappear on Saturday Night Live, as Will Forte and the creators still have a good working relationship with the show. The director has jokingly suggested a Broadway show, and with this team, anything could happen with this unique and funny character.
