CBS Future-Proofs NCIS For Timothy McGee’s MCRT Exit

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the latest episode of NCIS! It’s becoming increasingly clear that Timothy McGee will be leaving the show, and CBS seems to be preparing for that possibility. NCIS is at a critical point in its run, especially with so many significant story developments and production changes happening now. These changes suggest the show is entering a final phase of reinvention after Mark Harmon (Leroy Jethro Gibbs) left in 2021.

The team is dealing with the sudden loss of NCIS Director Leon Vance after 18 years of service. His death has created a leadership gap, and while Alden Parker’s team is functioning well, it’s important that the next director allows the Major Case Response Team (MCRT) to operate with independence, rather than being overly controlled. McGee is currently seen as the best candidate to fill Vance’s position, and CBS is beginning to plan for his transition out of his current role.

Curtis’ Return Sets Up NCIS’s Potential McGee Replacement (With A Major Caveat)

Okay, so I just watched episode 15 of NCIS season 23, “Knick Knack,” and it was a good one! The team investigated the death of a curator at a ship museum, which surprisingly led back to some WWII-era secrets. A fun shake-up this week was seeing Curtis Hubley fill in for Kasie Hines while she’s away on personal leave – it’s great to have him back! Now, a little clarification for anyone confused: J. Claude Deering’s character is the agency’s tech guy, not an agent, so don’t expect him to just step into McGee’s role. Overall, a solid episode with a nice blend of current investigation and historical intrigue.

His return suggests CBS is planning big changes for NCIS. He can readily fill in when Sean Murray’s character is promoted, but replacing McGee will be difficult. As the show’s longest-running cast member, altering his role so significantly will likely disrupt the series’ familiar feel. Becoming the director means a shift in his duties, moving him away from his usual desk job.

Replacing a core team member like him won’t be quick, but having recurring guest characters like Curtis and Dale Sawyer takes some of the pressure off finding someone immediately. It also allows these supporting characters to shine and potentially earn a permanent spot on the team.

Why NCIS Has No Choice But To Force McGee Out Of MCRT

While it hasn’t been officially announced, many fans believe McGee is the natural choice to take over Vance’s position. The show often takes its time with confirmations and could use this transition to introduce a new storyline. However, longtime viewers will agree that McGee possesses all the qualities needed to succeed Vance. Murray’s character also proved capable in an acting director role. Vance himself recognized McGee’s leadership abilities during his final conversation with Ducky, essentially endorsing him as the best fit. No one is better prepared to lead the NCIS team than its most experienced agent.

McGee’s career has been stuck for a while now. This is mainly because there haven’t been many chances for him to move up after he declined the MCRT supervisor position. He also didn’t get the Deputy Director job at NCIS. This is CBS’s last real opportunity to address the situation without causing significant problems for the show. Choosing someone else for the role would likely cause even more of a negative reaction than when Gibbs retired.
