Experts have found a Cold War bunker hidden beneath Scarborough Castle in England, a historic medieval fortress.
For years, the location of a Cold War bunker, closed and hidden away in 1968, was unknown, existing only as rumors online. Recently, archaeologists at English Heritage successfully located it in North Yorkshire, England.
According to Kevin Booth, a senior curator at English Heritage, historical maps gave them a general idea of where to look. However, it was radar technology that ultimately revealed what they were searching for – a large, concrete structure. After four days of digging under Scarborough Castle, the archeological team discovered a small chamber, about 15.5 feet long and 7.5 feet wide.
Experts described it as a “1960s concrete bunker watching for Armageddon”
The underground shelter was built for members of the Royal Observer Corps, who were responsible for watching for and reporting on any nuclear explosions during a potential war.
“It’s unusual to find a Cold War bunker within Scarborough Castle,” Booth explained. “However, it’s actually an ideal spot.” He pointed out that the bunker’s location on a headland with a long history – going all the way back to the Bronze Age – made it strategically smart.

The bunker was flooded with about six feet of water, making it too dangerous to go inside right now. It will stay closed until we can make sure it’s safe. Dr. Booth says he and his team are excited to explore what’s inside once it’s accessible.
