As a sitcom fan, I can confidently say that Parks and Recreation isn’t just great – it’s one of the best to ever grace our screens. Even years after it wrapped up in 2015, the finale still stands out as one of the most satisfying of the decade. Created by the brilliant minds behind The Office – Greg Daniels and Michael Schur – this NBC gem ran for seven seasons, starting in 2009, and quickly became a comedy staple. It’s a show that consistently earns its place in any ‘best TV shows of all time’ conversation.
Though its initial season wasn’t a hit, Parks and Recreation quickly found its footing and consistently improved. It’s unusual for a TV show to get better over time, but Parks and Rec did just that throughout its seven seasons, finishing strongly. The series finale was ambitious, and those risks ultimately worked, making the show even more beloved 11 years later.
Parks & Recreation Brilliantly Used Time-Jumps In Its Finale
The sixth season of Parks and Recreation concluded with a flash forward, revealing that Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) and her team were successfully working on the third floor of City Hall three years in the future. Because of this, the final season begins three years after the events of season six, but the very last episode used time jumps even more effectively.
The episode, called “One Last Ride,” centers around Leslie bringing the Parks and Recreation team together for one last task: repairing a swing set. Throughout the episode, we also see glimpses into the future, showing what happens to everyone. For instance, Andy and April have a child, Tom becomes a famous author and motivational speaker, and Jerry remarkably lives to be 100 while serving as Mayor.
As a huge fan, one of the best things about Parks & Rec for me was how they showed us where everyone ended up. It was so satisfying to see Leslie become Governor of Indiana and serve two terms! And then, at Jerry’s funeral, they brilliantly implied that either Leslie or Ben had gone on to become President. Those glimpses into the future were just perfect – everything felt true to each character’s personality and what they were striving for. It really tied everything together beautifully.
It’s tricky for TV shows, particularly comedies, to jump around in time. These techniques can disrupt the flow of an episode and feel out of character. However, Parks & Recreation successfully used time jumps to show viewers what the future held for their favorite characters, ultimately delivering a satisfying series finale by staying true to who they were.
Parks & Recreation’s Finale Got Even Better After Its 2020 Reunion Special
Although the Parks and Recreation finale seemed like the end, the cast came back together in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic for a special reunion. They cleverly recreated their characters in a video call, giving fans an update on what everyone was up to and seamlessly continuing the show’s story.
The Parks & Rec pandemic reunion showed Leslie continuing to succeed, Ben developing a new version of Cones of Dunshire (though he was still occupied with work), Tom brainstorming new businesses, and Ron enjoying life at his cabin with his family, despite a visit from Tammy 2.
Unlike some reunion specials that altered the original endings of their shows, the Parks & Rec special enhanced the show’s already excellent finale, acting as a lovely addition to it.
Could Parks & Recreation Get A Revival?
Given the trend of popular TV shows being rebooted, many fans have wondered if Parks and Recreation might return. Discussions about a possible revival started in 2019, when the cast said at a Parks and Rec 10-year anniversary event they’d be interested, as long as creator Greg Schur had a fresh idea (according to Variety).
Schur said he’d never rule out a reunion, but only if everyone involved felt a strong reason to do it – and if even one person was against it, it wouldn’t happen. Since then, there’s been no talk of bringing Parks & Rec back, and honestly, that’s probably for the best.
The way Parks and Recreation ended – with a fantastic series finale and a heartwarming reunion special – makes it very difficult to consider bringing the show back. The creators beautifully wrapped up the characters’ stories and showed us their successes, providing a truly perfect ending. It’s a great example of how to conclude a TV series, and it deserves to remain that way.
