Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Finally Removes The Biggest Netflix Plot Hole

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 4.

Episode 4 of Daredevil: Born Again features a major plot twist that resolves a long-standing issue from the original Daredevil series on Netflix. Because Daredevil: Born Again continues the story from the Defenders saga, but now as part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has a unique opportunity to connect events from previous Marvel films and Disney+ shows, as well as the earlier Netflix series.

The first season of Daredevil: Born Again mostly told a complete story on its own, with only minor connections to the larger Marvel universe. It felt like a fresh start. However, the current version of season 2 is different. It heavily references and pays tribute to the old Netflix Daredevil series while also building towards new storylines.

Episode 4 really showcased everything the show was building towards, including Bullseye’s violence, Matt’s internal struggles, and the final showdown with Kingpin and Vanessa Fisk. The episode ended with a shocking twist – Vanessa seemingly dying – which neatly resolves a major storyline connecting the original Daredevil series with the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again: Matt’s agreement with Fisk.

In season 3 of Daredevil, Matt successfully stopped Wilson Fisk by threatening his wife, Vanessa. He warned that if Fisk returned to crime, Daredevil would find her. This effectively ended Fisk’s criminal empire. However, the Daredevil: Born Again series ignored this agreement, leaving fans wondering why that crucial plot point from season 3 wasn’t followed up on. Now, with Vanessa presumed dead, that storyline is no longer an issue, potentially opening up exciting new directions for Daredevil: Born Again.

Vanessa’s Death In Daredevil: Born Again Makes Both Fisk & Matt More Dangerous

Vanessa’s death will likely have a major effect on the upcoming season of Daredevil: Born Again, primarily by making both Fisk and Matt Murdock more formidable. With Fisk, this is clear: his love for Vanessa has always been a vulnerability, whether by moderating his violent impulses or by being exploited against him, as Matt did in season 3 of Daredevil.

Fisk’s former vulnerability is now gone, and he’s likely to increase his control over New York City, becoming even more dangerous. He will relentlessly hunt down those responsible for his wife’s death and anyone who dares to oppose him. Vanessa had been instrumental in Fisk’s attempts to legitimize himself through politics, but with her passing, he’s free to return to his roots in organized crime.

Vanessa’s death has taken away Daredevil’s most effective way to control Wilson Fisk. As shown in season 3 of Daredevil, threatening Vanessa was the only non-lethal tactic Matt could devise to stop Kingpin. Now that she’s gone, Fisk is stronger and has more power than ever before.

With Vanessa Marianna no longer available as leverage, and Fisk controlling everything, Daredevil has exhausted his usual options. Previously, using Vanessa was his last hope for defeating Kingpin without crossing a line. Now that she’s out of the picture – and any possibility of a deal like the one seen in season 3 of Daredevil is gone – the question is whether Daredevil will finally resort to killing Fisk.

Vanessa’s Death Can Make Born Again Different From Netflix’s Daredevil

The new Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again, has been aiming to recapture the feel and storyline of the original Daredevil series on Netflix for the past season and a half. Interestingly, even though it removed a significant character from the Netflix show, this change might actually be a good thing, helping the two versions stand apart from each other.

Vanessa was a compelling character in both series. Her complex relationship with Fisk, her fascination with his criminal world, her intelligence, and her occasional ruthlessness were central to many key storylines, even impacting events like Foggy’s attempted murder.

We’ve always believed Vanessa is essential to who Kingpin is, acting as a grounding force in his life. Now, with her gone, we’re seeing a truly unhinged Kingpin unleashed, and a full-scale conflict with Daredevil fueled by his grief and newfound power.

Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, is already a top-tier Marvel villain, and the new series suggests he’s about to become even more dangerous. If he truly unleashes his power, it will force Daredevil to reach new heights, and with the help (and opposition) of his wide range of allies and enemies, Daredevil: Born Again has the potential to surpass even the original Daredevil series.

The new show might not be better than the original, but it will definitely feel different now that a key character is gone. While we’ll miss Vanessa, her departure could actually give Daredevil: Born Again the chance to stand on its own and break free from the legacy of the first Daredevil series.
