Keanu Reeves’ New Apple TV Comedy Outcome Debuts at No. 1 Despite Mixed Rotten Tomatoes Score

Keanu Reeves is famous for playing tough characters like John Wick, but he’s versatile and enjoys working in different types of movies. His latest film, Outcome, is actually a comedy, not an action movie.

The new Apple TV+ show has quickly become a hit, reaching the top of the charts in the U.S. within a day of its release, according to FlixPatrol. This is despite receiving the lowest critic score on Rotten Tomatoes for Keanu Reeves in eight years.

I was so excited to see that Outcome immediately hit number one in the U.S. and 19 other countries! It’s amazing considering it just came out and the charts hadn’t even fully finished updating yet. And it finally wrapped up its run after consistently being at the top since it started streaming in December.

What Happens in Outcome?

The new film, Outcome, begins similarly to the life of Keanu Reeves, featuring a character named Reef Hawk, a long-established Hollywood star famous for blockbuster franchises. However, unlike Reeves, this character is portrayed as flawed and unlikeable.

Reef Hawk, an actor who stepped away from the screen five years ago, is attempting a comeback with help from his close friends, Kyle and Xander, and his lawyer, Ira. But just as things are looking up, he learns about a damaging video that threatens to ruin his career. Determined to find out who’s behind it, Reef sets out on a personal journey to right past wrongs and uncover the blackmailer’s identity.

Jonah Hill directs, stars, and co-wrote the screenplay for this dark comedy, playing Reef’s lawyer, Ira, and also served as a producer. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Keanu Reeves, Matt Bomer, Cameron Diaz, David Spade, Laverne Cox, Kaia Gerber, Roy Wood Jr., Susan Lucci, Atsuko Okatsuka, Martin Scorsese, Welker White, Ivy Wolk, Drew Barrymore, and Van Jones.

Outcome Has a Mixed Reception

Despite having a promising idea and a well-known cast, the show Outcome hasn’t received good reviews from critics. Currently, it has a 28% approval rating based on 29 reviews. While there isn’t an overall audience score yet, early viewers on Apple TV seemed to enjoy it more, with one calling it “Terrific” and describing it as “a quiet but captivating burn.”

In a review for The Travers Take, Peter Travers criticizes Jonah Hill’s film Outcome, calling it a humorless satire of Hollywood’s cancel culture and the tabloid media. He argues the film fails to develop its characters and wastes the talents of Keanu Reeves and a strong supporting cast with outdated jokes.

In a critical review, Jack Martin of Film Feeder described the film as a self-pitying attempt to gain sympathy while simultaneously downplaying serious issues in a troubling way.

Matt Zoller Seitz, writing for RogerEbert.com, praised the film, noting that director James Gray has a knack for finding the emotional core of scenes and presenting them in a subtle, impactful way.

Unfortunately, Outcome is Keanu Reeves’ lowest-rated movie in eight years. Before this, his last poorly received film was the 2018 release, which only earned a 9% approval rating from critics. Since then, Reeves has consistently appeared in well-received films, including the recent , which has become a popular streaming title despite not performing strongly in theaters.

Outcome is streaming on Apple TV.
