Finn Wolfhard, best known for his role in Stranger Things, is now joining the cast of the Malcolm in the Middle revival, titled Life’s Still Unfair.
Twenty years after Malcolm in the Middle finished, Frankie Muniz is reprising his role as Malcolm, now as an adult navigating his famously chaotic family. The new limited series brings back original cast members like Bryan Cranston, Justin Berfield, Christopher Masterson, and Jane Kaczermarek, and also includes a dedicated fan of the show who’s excited to be a part of it.
Linwood Boomer, the creator, and Tracy Katsky, the producer, recently shared stories with ScreenRant about bringing back Malcolm in the Middle for Life’s Still Unfair. They discussed how Finn Wolfhard, a big fan of the original show, went from wanting to just visit the set to landing a memorable cameo. It was a dream come true for the actor, and Boomer and Katsky detailed exactly how it all happened.
You won’t believe this story! We got a call from Finn Wolfhard’s manager – apparently, he was a huge fan of our show and wanted to visit the set. We were happy to have him and even wrote him a part. He was so excited, and his manager was too! The funny part? It was his very first day on set, and he was in a scene with Jane Kaczmarek, who was really laying into his character. He actually stopped mid-scene and said, ‘I forgot I’m supposed to be acting!’ It was adorable, honestly. He was so sweet and a little overwhelmed, which was completely understandable!
Linwood Boomer: Yeah, he was like, “Lois is yelling at me!” [Chuckles]
Tracy Katsky described how much of a fan Finn was of the original show, saying he often referenced it directly to Linwood. Many people involved in the original series were present, including director Ken Kwapis and Alex Reed, who joined the show mid-season one. Finn would frequently bring up very specific details – like events from season five, episode seventeen – that no one else remembered, which everyone found amusing.
Linwood Boomer: [In a faux tone] “Yeah, we remember that too.”
Wolfhard enthusiastically showed his passion for the project on set, making a strong impression on everyone involved. This role is his first significant television appearance since he finished playing Mike Wheeler on Netflix’s Stranger Things after ten years.
We absolutely loved him! He was incredibly charming and sweet, and we really appreciated him being willing to help us out.
I was really happy to see that work out – it was a fun surprise! It was also great because it was something completely different for him, and I thought, ‘This is good!’ He’s starting to show a quirky side, which is interesting.
Tracy Katsky thought he was really funny, even though he hadn’t really showcased that side of himself before. They were pleased for him, and it was great to see a different side of his acting ability. It was genuinely impressive.
Finn Wolfhard’s next television role marks a new chapter for the actor, who is eager to prioritize his band, The Aubreys, and pursue music more seriously. While known for his parts in films like It (2017) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, he’s also lending his voice to the upcoming animated series New-Gen. This project comes after his popular role in Stranger Things and signals a shift in focus for Wolfhard.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is available to watch on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
