British television is famous for murder mysteries, but few have truly become classics of the genre. While shows like Broadchurch, starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman, and The Fall, with Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan, achieved international success, both only lasted three seasons. Each series neatly concluded its storylines and characters’ journeys by the end.
It’s easy to see why self-contained, short stories like mysteries are so popular – the format works well. However, it’s often the long-running crime dramas that truly endure, constantly refreshing themselves with new characters and plots while still staying true to their original appeal. While very few British detective shows reach ten seasons or more – even beloved series like Inspector Morse didn’t – some of Britain’s most famous procedural dramas have managed to achieve that impressive longevity.
Silent Witness (29 Seasons)
Status: Renewed For Season 30
Silent Witness is a long-running and popular UK television show. It began in 1996 and has aired almost every year since, totaling over 274 episodes. The series stars Emilia Fox as Dr. Nikki Alexander, a skilled and caring forensic pathologist who is at the heart of each investigation.
Unlike typical detective shows, Silent Witness – which you can stream on BritBox in the US – focuses on the work of forensic scientists as they investigate murders. Each episode features a team of experts working tirelessly to find justice for victims. Even after three decades, the show remains engaging and innovative, constantly presenting new challenges – both emotional and physical – for its scientists.
Midsomer Murders (25 Seasons)
Status: Renewed For Season 26
If you enjoy cozy mysteries, you’ll love Midsomer Murders, a long-running detective series that’s been on for 25 seasons. Based on Caroline Graham’s Chief Inspector Barnaby books, the show takes place in the picturesque, but deadly, English county of Midsomer. Beneath the charming scenery, you’ll find some surprisingly ruthless killers. With a minimum of three murders per episode, the small villages of Midsomer are constantly threatened as love triangles, secret deals, and intense jealousy all lead to deadly consequences.
Every episode of Midsomer Murders presents a new, complex murder investigation, with detectives DCI Barnaby (played by both John Nettles and Neil Dudgeon) and their trusted partners working to solve the crimes. Since its debut in 1997, the show has become a huge international success, selling to over 200 countries and becoming one of Britain’s most popular TV exports. You can currently watch all episodes on Acorn TV in the US, and a 26th season is coming soon.
Death in Paradise (15 Seasons)
Status: Renewed For Season 16
Since it first aired in 2011, Death in Paradise, created by Robert Thorogood, has become a beloved show on the BBC. The series focuses on a new British detective who arrives on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie every few seasons. Each detective must adjust to island life while investigating challenging murder mysteries. Over the years, five different detectives have led the investigations, each bringing their own unique style to the show.
The British detective show Death in Paradise is unique for creating a connected world of spin-off series, affectionately called the “Paraverse.” Currently, you can watch two of these spin-offs: Beyond Paradise, set in the English seaside town of Shipton Abbott, and Return to Paradise, which takes place in coastal Australia. And there are no signs of this universe slowing down! You can stream all episodes of Death in Paradise and its spin-offs on BritBox in North America.
A Touch of Frost (15 Seasons)
Status: Ended
Despite running for 15 seasons, A Touch of Frost only has 42 episodes. You can currently watch all of them on BritBox in the US. The series is adapted from the Frost novels by R.D. Wingfield and stars David Jason as DI Jack Frost. Frost is a detective known for being unconventional, blunt, and sarcastic, and he keeps his emotions hidden – but when he does reveal them, it’s powerful.
While Robert Frost’s detective stories are often dark and focus on the characters’ minds, they’re also surprisingly enjoyable, especially the interactions between DI Frost and his superiors. These scenes really shine thanks to Jason’s well-known talent for comedy, which he previously showcased in popular British shows like Only Fools and Horses and The Darling Buds of May. Frost is definitely among the most memorable British detectives, ranking alongside iconic figures like Hercule Poirot, as played by David Suchet, and John Thaw’s Inspector Morse.
Vera (14 Seasons)
Status: Ended
Brenda Blethyn plays Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope, a truly original character in crime dramas. When Vera debuted in 2011, female detectives leading UK television series were rare. Set in northern England and streaming on BritBox, Blethyn’s portrayal of the insightful, compassionate, and often solitary DCI Stanhope is reason enough to tune in. Her performance feels deeply personal, going beyond simply playing a role.
DCI Vera Stanhope, with her relatable habits and down-to-earth personality, deeply cares for everyone involved in her cases – both victims and suspects – making it easy for viewers to feel empathy for all of them, even within the show’s standard mystery format. Brenda Blethyn’s powerful performance is the heart of Vera, and the show’s consistently clever and captivating mysteries – many adapted from Ann Cleeves’ Vera Stanhope novels – are an added bonus. The stories are emotionally powerful and often quite disturbing, perfectly demonstrating why crime dramas remain so popular.
Agatha Christie’s Poirot (13 Seasons)
Status: Ended
As a huge fan of British mysteries, it’s impossible to talk about the genre without mentioning Agatha Christie. While the Marple series didn’t have a super long run, Agatha Christie’s Poirot was a massive success, running for thirteen seasons from 1989 to 2013 and giving us a total of seventy episodes! What’s amazing is that by the time it finished, every single Poirot story written by Christie had been adapted for TV, and David Suchet absolutely became Hercule Poirot – he was perfect in the role. You can stream all the episodes now on BritBox and AcornTV, which is fantastic!
The show, set in the 1930s, changed over time, shifting from lighthearted and amusing stories to episodes that were darker and more visually striking. Though some episodes, particularly in the later seasons, weren’t always successful, the show consistently delivered clever mysteries – a testament to Agatha Christie’s reputation as a master of crime. David Suchet’s performance as Poirot was exceptional, offering a truly definitive take on one of fiction’s most beloved detectives.
Father Brown (13 Seasons)
Status: Reportedly Renewed For Season 14
The BBC series Father Brown is a charming and consistently popular adaptation of G.K. Chesterton’s books. Mark Williams, known for his role in Harry Potter, plays Father Brown, a unique priest who enjoys solving crimes in his 1950s Cotswolds village. He’s dedicated to his parishioners, but he has a knack for unraveling mysteries, from simple thefts to serious cases of blackmail and even murder.
Father Brown, a bit of a troublemaker for the local police, travels around the peaceful village of Kembleford with his adventurous friends – often by bike or in classic cars – working to restore calm. Similar to the popular show Death in Paradise, Father Brown has been a hit, leading to a spin-off series, the delightful Sister Boniface Mysteries. You can stream both shows on BritBox, and they’re well worth checking out.
Grantchester (10 Seasons)
Status: Renewed For 11th And Final Season
It’s become surprisingly common to see crime-solving priests and vicars in British murder mysteries. A great example is Grantchester, which airs on PBS Masterpiece in the US. The show follows a vicar in Cambridgeshire and a detective who become close friends and work together to solve crimes. Set in the mid-20th century, the drama explores difficult social issues while also offering a unique blend of emotional depth, fun, and friendship.
Throughout its run, most of the actors in Grantchester have remained with the show, particularly Robson Green as DI Geordie Keating. While three different vicars have played a key role, each—from James Norton’s Sidney Chambers to Rishi Nair’s Alphy Kotteram—has brought a unique perspective, helping Geordie understand himself better as they both navigate their personal lives and faith. Grantchester is a wonderfully touching murder mystery series, and its final season promises to solidify its place as one of the UK’s best dramas in recent years.
