Lawyer skips court date after viral exchange with judge who berated IT worker

James Stafford, the attorney known for a recent courtroom argument about his treatment of an IT worker, didn’t show up for his scheduled court appearance.

In late March, a video of Texas judge Nathan Milliron angrily confronting an IT technician spread quickly online, causing a social media backlash.

During a hearing, the judge presiding over the 215th District Court in Harris County became frustrated with an audio problem, exclaiming his annoyance. An IT technician assured him it was a minor issue, but the judge still asked him to leave the courtroom.

Following the public criticism, James Stafford, Milliron’s lawyer, emailed the judge, requesting an apology. Stafford wrote that he hoped the judge would apologize for how he treated Milliron and suggested it might have just been a bad day, not reflective of the judge’s usual behavior.

Judge won’t take “any further action” against lawyer

The situation gained traction on social media, particularly after Milliron requested that Stafford appear in court on April 9th due to an inappropriate private conversation with the judge.

I just read in the Houston Chronicle that Matthew Stafford didn’t show up for his court date, but it sounds like he had a lot of support! Apparently, a bunch of lawyers from the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association were there backing him up.

The Chronicle reports that the lawyer’s name is being withheld, and Milliron has stopped any unlawful behavior targeting him.

Brent Mayr, who leads the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association, is continuing to ask the judge to issue an apology.

Honestly, as a fan, I really think he needs to apologize to everyone in Harris County. Something along the lines of admitting he won’t behave that way again, you know? He told the Houston Chronicle that’s what he should do, and I completely agree. It would go a long way.

It remains to be seen if the judge will issue that apology, however.
