With Amazon now owning the James Bond franchise after acquiring MGM, fans are curious about the future of 007. Some are disappointed, fearing the classic movie experience will be lost to streaming. However, others are excited about the potential for new developments with the iconic character. One thing is certain: James Bond will be back soon, and speculation is already running wild about who will take on the role next. It will be a challenge for any new actor to follow Daniel Craig, but whoever is cast will undoubtedly bring their own unique take on the legendary spy, just like those who’ve played him before.
Daniel Craig was a fantastic James Bond, and the world created for his films was truly exciting. His five movies stand out as some of the best in the franchise, thanks to memorable villains, strong supporting characters, impressive visuals, and captivating stories. Though fans enjoyed seeing his Bond story come to a conclusion, many would be thrilled if Craig ever decided to return. Surprisingly, the final film, No Time to Die, subtly hinted at both the possibility of Craig reprising the role and the introduction of a new 007.
The Five-Year Time Jump in No Time to Die Opens the Door for More Storytelling
The film No Time to Die begins with James Bond and Madeleine Swann on the run from Spectre, narrowly escaping a dangerous situation. This exciting opening establishes the film’s plot and then jumps forward five years. While Bond disappears during this time, the film implies that MI6 continues to fight Spectre with its other agents. A significant storyline introduces Nomi, played by Lashana Lynch, as the new 007 who takes on Bond’s role during his absence. Nomi consistently demonstrates exceptional skills and proves to be a valuable asset to MI6, suggesting potential for many exciting, unseen missions.
With James Bond heading to streaming, continuing the story with Nomi as the lead agent feels like a natural fit, especially for fans who enjoyed the recent Daniel Craig films. It would offer a new direction for the Bond universe while bringing back popular characters like Q, Moneypenny, and M. Nomi’s adventures could continue the fight against SPECTRE, even with Blofeld imprisoned, and introduce new threats. There’s even potential for familiar faces like Blofeld and Madeleine Swann to reappear. Most excitingly, this approach opens the door for another character to return in a way that feels organic to the franchise.
Daniel Craig’s James Bond Could Return a Couple More Times
The latest James Bond films with Daniel Craig have a five-year gap between them, which is a significant amount of time in the series. Even though Bond has retired from active service with MI6, he’s still likely to encounter trouble. During his time away, it’s easy to imagine him getting pulled into a crisis he didn’t seek out. We see this hinted at in No Time to Die with Felix Leiter needing his help, and it’s possible Leiter sought Bond out earlier in those five years. Perhaps the US needed assistance with a problem, or maybe something personal and morally challenging forced Bond to act. Given the established characters and universe, it would be exciting to see Daniel Craig’s Bond embroiled in another adventure during this period.
The idea of Daniel Craig returning as James Bond is intriguing, but not very probable. No Time to Die strongly establishes that Bond has been completely disconnected from MI6 for five years. M, Q, and Moneypenny confirm they haven’t seen him, and Nomi meets him for the first time during the film, suggesting Craig’s Bond can’t be deeply involved with MI6 operations. However, a small cameo role is still possible – perhaps assisting with a minor issue connected to a larger crisis, or offering guidance to another agent. While this wouldn’t be a major return, it would still bring Craig back as Bond. During those five years, Bond could have been traveling before settling down, creating an opportunity for a brief cameo where he’s unaware of the action happening around him – maybe enjoying a martini at a bar. Even a quick glimpse of him would likely thrill many fans.
There Are Even Better Ways to Bring Daniel Craig Back to the Franchise
Beyond brief appearances, Daniel Craig could potentially return for a full new Bond film, similar to how Sean Connery revisited the role years after his initial run. Just as Connery starred in Never Say Never Again in 1983, a new story could be developed explaining Craig’s Bond’s survival after the events on Safin’s Island, bringing him back for another mission. The relatively small time jumps between Craig’s previous films also offer a possibility for another story, though this would likely involve a younger version of the character, making it less probable.
As a huge Bond fan, I’ve been thinking about what’s next for 007 after No Time to Die. While it’s fun to imagine Bond continuing with MI6 right away, or even having one last showdown with Spectre before his break, I don’t really see that happening. It feels like we’re definitely moving towards a reboot. Honestly, I’m excited! There are so many fantastic actors who could take on the role – Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Idris Elba, Cillian Murphy… the list goes on! Whoever they choose, I hope they bring something new and exciting to the part. For me, the best thing about James Bond is seeing different actors put their own spin on the character. It keeps things fresh and interesting, and it’s important to give new talent a chance to shine.
