Okay, so YouTube’s testing something cool for Premium members like me. Basically, it can now change how fast a video plays, but it does it smartly – so the video still looks clear and doesn’t get all glitchy. It’s kinda like tweaking the playback speed, but way smoother and more automatic. Pretty neat if you ask me!
YouTube, which is owned by Google, is constantly testing new features to improve how people watch videos. Recently, they’ve been updating the playback speed controls, giving viewers more options to customize their experience.
Okay, so sometimes I like to speed up videos when I’m short on time, which is great. But then, other times, the speaker is already talking super fast, and I have to slow it back down. It’s annoying having to constantly adjust the playback speed!
Okay, so YouTube is trying out something new, and as a viewer, I’m kinda curious! They’re testing a feature called “auto speed” which basically means YouTube will change how fast a video plays all on its own. It’s supposed to adjust the speed automatically while you’re watching.
YouTube’s new “auto speed” feature speeds up videos on its own
To test this feature, you must have a YouTube Premium subscription. Then, go to your Settings and choose ‘Try experimental new features’.
To use Auto speed, you’ll need to manually enable it in the playback speed settings of the video. YouTube explains this feature is designed to help you watch longer videos more efficiently without skipping over key information.
YouTube is experimenting with a new feature for Premium subscribers called ‘On-the-go’. It’s designed to make listening to audio content – like podcasts and talk shows – easier by removing distracting elements from the screen, such as comments.

This feature provides easy-to-use playback controls, perfect for when you’re working or doing other things while on the move. It can start automatically if YouTube notices you haven’t interacted with the video for a minute, or Android users can turn it on themselves in the settings.
You can turn on YouTube’s background play feature at any time by going to the Settings icon (the gear) in the top-right corner of a video, then choosing ‘More’ and selecting ‘Premium controls’. Also, if you’re moving around with your phone while a video is playing, you might see a suggestion to enable it automatically.
These features are still in testing, and you can try them out and share your thoughts with Google until April 27th.
