There’s been a lot of talk and guessing lately about James Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel. Gunn is aware of all the rumors about what he has planned for David Corenswet’s Clark Kent in the movie, which is expected to come out in 2027, and it’s hard to know what’s true and what isn’t.
James Gunn recently revealed that Ella Purnell, Adria Arjona, and Marisa Abela were all considered for the role of Maxima, a powerful warrior queen from Almerac, who will be a key villain in Superman 2.
This has all led to a wild-and-crazy last 24 hours for the Son of Krypton.
Alien: Earth, Andor Stars Screened by James Gunn for Superman
James Gunn criticized a recent report by Deadline, calling it inaccurate and poorly done. He expressed disappointment, noting he had previously considered Deadline a reliable source. Gunn added that if they had simply checked the information with him and his team, they would have quickly learned it was false.
So, I’ve known Adria for ages – I actually cast her in ‘The Belko Experiment.’ I’m a big admirer of Marisa and Ella’s work, though I have to admit, I’ve never actually had the chance to meet them. It’s a small world, isn’t it?
The next day, Deadline released an updated report listing three new actors being considered for the role of Maxima. Interestingly, they still included Adria Arjona in the potential candidates, alongside Sydney Chandler – known for playing the main character, Wendy, in the series Alien: Earth.
According to sources at Deadline, James Gunn is close to casting another important role in the upcoming Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow. Grace Van Patten (known for Tell Me Lies), Sydney Chandler (Alien: Earth), Eva De Dominici (The Cleaning Lady), and Adria Arjona (Andor) were among the actresses who auditioned for the part last week.
Will Andor’s Adria Arjona Become Maxima … or Wonder Woman?
The most interesting part of this media disagreement is that Gunn has acknowledged his personal connection with Arjona, explaining why her name was still included in the latest report. However, it’s still unclear what role she might have in Gunn’s DC Universe.
The actor from Andor might be auditioning for multiple parts, allowing James Gunn to figure out which role she’s best suited for. It seems highly likely that if she’s being considered for the DC Universe, Wonder Woman is one of the roles she’s testing for.
It’s worth remembering that Gunn was the one who first suggested Arjona to Extra, saying she’d be perfect as Wonder Woman. He still hasn’t cast anyone in that role for the DC Universe, though.
So far, we know David Corenswet will star in the 2025 Superman movie, and James Gunn has cast Lars Eidinger as Brainiac. It looks like Maxima, another villain, will also appear, though the actress who will play her hasn’t been announced yet.
James Gunn’s Superman is currently streaming on HBO Max.
