The new Magic: The Gathering set, Secrets of Strixhaven, is almost released! We’re giving you a sneak peek at a card we think will be very popular in the Draft format: Tragedy Feaster.
Magic: The Gathering is heading back to school, but a bit later in the year, with the upcoming release of Secrets of Strixhaven. After a recent collaboration featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the game is returning to its roots with a focus on the famous college for mages.
Following the popular return to the world of Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, experienced Magic: The Gathering players can now revisit the prestigious Strixhaven university. While all five of Strixhaven’s Colleges are interesting, we’re going to explain why the Witherbloom College, with its focus on necromantic druids, is particularly compelling.
We’re thrilled to share a first look at a new card from Magic: The Gathering’s Secrets of Strixhaven – Tragedy Feaster! This card should especially appeal to Black mana players, and we’re also showing off its special, alternate ‘Borderless Field Notes’ artwork.
Exclusive MTG Secrets of Strixhaven reveal: Tragedy Feaster

Tragedy Feaster is a powerful black demon creature designed to be strong in the mid-game. It costs two colorless and two black mana to summon, but its impressive 7/6 stats make that cost well worth it.
Normally, a creature with 7 power and 6 toughness appearing on turn four would be an immediate target for opponents to eliminate. However, someone on the game development team also gave this creature protection, but at the cost of forcing you to discard a card. To balance this combination of abilities, the card requires you to sacrifice one of your permanents at the end of your turn unless you’ve gained life during that turn.
Tragedy Feaster can quickly deplete your deck due to its cost and the sacrifices it requires. However, it fits well within the Witherbloom strategy from Magic: The Gathering’s Secrets of Strixhaven set. This Golgari (Black/Green) combination focuses on gaining life and draining it from opponents.
The Witherbloom cards already demonstrate a focus on gaining life, and the typical Golgari strategy isn’t afraid of using cards from the graveyard. With smart deck construction and careful gameplay to avoid its weaknesses, Tragedy Feaster is likely to be a powerful card in Secrets of Strixhaven draft formats and a useful addition to life-gain Commander decks.
Tragedy Feaster also boasts incredible artwork by Raph Lomotan, who previously created stunning designs for Eldrazi creatures like Inversion Behemoth and Glaring Fleshraker. Their experience really shines through in capturing the Demon’s unique and otherworldly appearance. Plus, Rimas Valeikis designed a special Borderless card treatment, presented as entries from a student’s journal at Strixhaven.

Get ready to meet Tragedy Feaster soon – she’ll be featured in the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, Secrets of Strixhaven, which comes out on April 24, 2026.
If you can’t wait for the official launch, you can play at local WPN stores starting a week early on April 17, 2026.
