One ‘Blessing’ (And ‘Curse’) With Bruce Willis’ Diagnosis, According To His Wife

Over the last few years, 70-year-old actor Bruce Willis has been dealing with health issues. He stopped acting in 2022 after his team announced he had aphasia, a condition impacting speech and understanding. In 2023, his diagnosis was changed to frontotemporal dementia, and his family – with his wife, Emma Heming, taking the lead – has been providing care and keeping the public informed. Emma is now openly discussing one aspect of her husband’s condition that feels like both a blessing and a curse.

As of late, 47-year-old Emma Heming Willis has been promoting her new book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path. In it, Heming Willis chronicles her experiences serving as a caregiver for her husband over the past several years. While the mother of two discussed various health related-topics during the tour, she just recently took to Instagram to highlight a term known as anosognosia, which she wishes she would’ve discussed more while during interviews.

Heming Willis shared in a post that anosognosia – a condition discussed in her book – is a neurological issue where someone doesn’t fully understand the specifics of their own illness. Her post clarifies that this isn’t simply “denial” but a natural “part of the disease”, where a person might minimize how serious their condition is or try to make sense of it. Bruce didn’t seem to experience this, which Heming Willis explained was a good thing for him, but challenging for her:

For Bruce, thankfully, he didn’t have to experience the burden of his illness-a real benefit, as it shielded him from understanding how heavy it was. But for me, it was the opposite: I had to cope with it while also bearing the weight of what he couldn’t perceive.

According to his wife, Bruce Willis didn’t realize the extent of his health problems because he doesn’t have anosognosia, and she views this as a positive thing – a “blessing” in a difficult situation. However, Emma Heming Willis describes a “curse” in that she’s been dealing with everything on her own, carrying a heavy emotional burden since her husband is unaware of his condition. As she shares in her post, many other caregivers face similar challenges and understand what she’s going through.
