Frankie Muniz is addressing the widespread rumors about his significant memory problems, especially now that he’s revisiting his iconic role in the new ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ series, ‘Life’s Still Unfair’.
The show picks up with Malcolm as an adult who’s distanced himself from his famously wild family because he’s ashamed of their behavior. He’s now trying to build a normal life with his own daughter and girlfriend, and is determined to keep his parents, Hal and Lois, and his brothers, Reese and Francis, from disrupting it.
Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey, declined a significant amount of money to reprise his role in the new show. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark has been cast as the new Dewey instead.
While publicizing his memoir, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, Frankie Muniz addressed rumors from a few years back about significant memory problems he was said to have.
Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz doesn’t actually have memory loss

Back in 2019, Frankie Muniz told People magazine he didn’t remember much from his childhood, including his time on the original show. However, he recently discussed these memory gaps in more detail on the Inside of You podcast, ahead of plans for a Malcolm in the Middle revival.
Muniz clarified a previous discussion about his memory, explaining that comments had been misinterpreted. He stated he doesn’t have memory problems, just a naturally poor memory, as he told Michael Rosenbaum.
I’ve spent years trying to understand why I struggle to retain information. Ever since I was a child – around eight years old – I’ve been constantly busy, traveling and experiencing all sorts of exciting things.
He explained that acting is something he’s done his entire life, and he’s accustomed to quickly becoming different characters before shifting to the next role.
According to Muniz, when filming wraps on a scene – they call ‘cut’ – it’s common to immediately move on without dwelling on it. He explained that he’s become so accustomed to quickly finishing one task and starting the next – whether it’s a different emotion, day, or character – that he often doesn’t fully process or remember what he’s just done.
Most people don’t remember specific days from when they were in school, and it’s the same for the actor when he thinks back to ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ – he began working on the show at age 13.
Sometimes I’ll be watching episodes and realize I have absolutely no memory of them – I can’t recall what even happens! It’s strange, because I feel like I should remember. It’s similar to trying to recall a specific moment from high school – like, what were you doing on a random Tuesday in February of your sophomore year? You probably have no idea.
It’s easy to forget what others think, but I’ll always remember specific moments from high school – the good, the bad, and everything in between. That’s how I’ll always remember Malcolm.
