Disney’s Zombies 5: First Look at New Movie Set Reveals Mermaids & Underwater Setting

A sneak peek from the set of Disney’s Zombies 5 shows that the new movie will take place underwater. After the events of Zombies 4 – where zombies and vampires made peace – the fifth film will follow new characters, Nova and Victor. They’ll have to deal with a group of powerful mermaids who threaten to break the peace between zombies and vampires.

Carlos Gonzalez, the cinematographer for Zombies 5, recently posted a photo of the film’s clapperboard, officially marking the beginning of filming. The clapperboard’s design included mermaids and the tagline “Make a Splash,” hinting that the movie will have a lot of underwater scenes.

Disney Channel’s official social media pages announced that filming has begun, sharing a new video introducing the movie’s stars.

Disney’s Zombies Instagram page shared some behind-the-scenes photos of the cast enjoying themselves during a recent table read. The pictures featured Freya Skye, Malachi Barton, Emily Costtrici, Taylor Oliver, Olive Mortimer, Swayam Bhatia, Mekonnen Knife, and Diaana Babnicova.

Skye and Barton will now play the main characters, Nova and Victor, replacing Milo Manheim and Meg Donnelly. While Manheim and Donnelly won’t be appearing in the movie, they will still be involved behind the scenes as executive producers.

With the release of Zombies 5, a fresh storyline begins, as the creators have announced it will kick off a new three-part series.

As a fan, it really feels like the original three films told a complete story, and now we’re seeing the beginning of a brand new adventure – almost like a whole new trilogy is starting up!

The photos revealed some of the new actors joining the cast of Zombies 5, including Emily Costtrici as Izzy the zombie, and three new mermaid characters: Pearl (played by Diaana Babnicova), Fin (played by Taylor Oliver), and Sandy (played by Olive Mortimer).

Barton and Skye can be seen smiling at each other in these behind-the-scenes photos.

Babnicova’s Pearl is portrayed as the effortlessly cool mermaid of the three main characters. It’s currently unclear whether she’s acting with bad intentions or simply making mistakes, especially given the mysterious circumstances surrounding the merfolk’s arrival.

Swayam Bhatia is back as Vera in Zombies 5, following her first appearance in Zombies 4. Vera is a key member of the vampire group and a good friend of Victor.

In Zombies 5, Olive Mortimer plays Sandy, a clever mermaid who comes to Rayburn and might shake things up – possibly with a new romance! Mekonnen Knife is back as Vargas, a vampire and friend to Victor and Vera.

In Zombies 5, Taylor Oliver plays Fin, a rebellious mermaid who might cause trouble for everyone.

Zombies 5 is slated for a 2027 release on Disney+.

Why Zombies 5’s Underwater Setting Is a Bold Choice

The new Zombies 5 movie takes the story underwater, which is a really cool addition! This opens up the world of the franchise and introduces things like sea creatures and maybe even a secret underwater kingdom, giving filmmakers lots of ideas for future movies. Adding mermaids and mermen creates endless possibilities for the story – they could be friends or foes!

Adding these creatures will drastically change things, challenging the characters’ recent peace and offering fans exciting new musical performances in an underwater environment.

With a fresh setting and exciting new challenges, Zombies 5 keeps the series from becoming stale and raises the stakes. The film allows both familiar and new characters to develop through interdimensional adventures, and continues the trend of adding more monsters to this already expansive world.

With its underwater setting, Zombies 5 is shaping up to be the most visually impressive film in the series so far.
