The second installment of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, currently known as The Batman Part 2, has added its seventh actor to the cast. Filming is scheduled to start this year, and the movie is expected to be released on October 1, 2027. Reeves, who wrote and is directing the sequel, is continuing the story established in the 2022 film The Batman and the 2024 HBO series The Penguin, creating a separate, connected universe for these stories.
Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman 2, officially becoming the seventh cast member confirmed for Matt Reeves’ sequel. This news, previously reported, is now confirmed.
Andy Serkis will return as Bruce Wayne’s butler, and filming is scheduled to begin in London this June. The early start to production – 16 months before the movie comes out – should give director Matt Reeves ample time to create another fantastic film.
It was quite a challenge to arrange Serkis’s schedule. He needed to juggle his work on The Batman 2 with his upcoming film, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is set to release on December 17, 2027. Serkis is returning as Gollum and will also direct the new Lord of the Rings movie, a story that takes place twenty years before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring.

Alfred’s return is especially meaningful after he almost died in The Batman. In the first movie, Andy Serkis played Alfred as more than just a butler – he was a father figure and a source of moral guidance, helping Bruce Wayne avoid being consumed by revenge.
Serkis has expressed his desire for the next film to really amplify the complicated emotional connection between Alfred and Bruce, taking it to its absolute limit.
Serkis joins a growing ensemble of confirmed returning and new cast members for The Batman 2.
The Batman 2 Cast So Far
Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson, who starred as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the first film, will return for The Batman 2, and he’s reportedly thrilled about it.
Pattinson has openly shared his excitement for the sequel, consistently praising Matt Reeves’ script. He told Deadline the script is truly exceptional and hinted at some bold and unexpected choices fans can anticipate in this unique version of Batman.
I believe this movie will be truly unique and exceptional. It’s ambitious and doesn’t shy away from taking risks.
Jeffrey Wright

While Batman battles criminals in Gotham City, he can always rely on GCPD Lieutenant Jim Gordon for support, and Jeffrey Wright will be returning to play the character.
In the first movie, Gordon played a crucial role, acting as Batman’s ally within a police force riddled with corruption. Together, they teamed up to defeat the villain, the Riddler (played by Paul Dano).
This will be Wright’s second time playing Gordon, after a previous role that included plans for an HBO Max series focused on corruption within the Gotham City Police Department.
Although the specifics of the plot are still secret, many fans believe Gordon might become police commissioner in the next movie, mirroring his role in the Batman comics and previous films. Details about other characters’ storylines are also being kept confidential.
Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell’s portrayal of the Penguin, known as Oz Cobb, was a major highlight of both The Batman movie and the The Penguin HBO series, which focused entirely on the character.
Colin Farrell will return as the Penguin, but he’s expected to have a relatively minor part in The Batman 2, according to previous statements he’s made.
Colin Farrell mentioned in October 2025 that he’ll have a smaller part in The Batman 2, but he’s pleased with it and has already read the entire script.
You know, my part in this movie is even smaller than before, but honestly, I’m totally fine with it. I actually read the whole script, cover to cover, and I get why it works. I’m happy to be a part of it, no matter the size of the role.
Now that Oz has firmly established himself as a major crime boss in Gotham after the events of The Penguin, even a small appearance from him will probably be important to the story.
Sebastian Stan

A thrilling new addition to the world of The Batman is Sebastian Stan, who continues to play Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will appear in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026.
While it’s not official yet, reports strongly suggest that Stan will be playing Harvey Dent, the district attorney of Gotham City, who later becomes the villain Two-Face.
It’s unclear if Harvey Dent will fully become the villain Two-Face in this movie, or if his transformation will continue in a future film planned for October 2027, but the seeds of his change will definitely be planted here.
Scarlett Johansson

A fascinating new casting choice for The Batman 2 is Scarlett Johansson. This represents a significant move for the actress, who spent over ten years portraying Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as she now joins the DC Universe.
Sources say Scarlett Johansson is joining the project in an undisclosed role, and many believe she’ll play a complex character – possibly both an antagonist and a romantic partner – especially now that Zoë Kravitz is no longer involved.
There’s a popular idea that the actress might be playing Andrea Beaumont, who is also known as The Phantasm. Director Matt Reeves has hinted that the film’s villain is unlike any other seen before in a movie, and while The Phantasm has appeared in animated DC projects, she hasn’t yet been featured in a live-action film.
Rumors suggest Johansson might portray Gilda Dent, Harvey Dent’s wife, connecting her to the same storyline as Stan.
Barry Keoghan

While not officially confirmed, Barry Keoghan’s role as the Joker is a compelling part of the mystery surrounding the villains in The Batman Part 2.
Keoghan’s first appearance as the Joker offered a fresh and disturbing interpretation of the character, featuring a heavily scarred face and a creepy demeanor. Because this version of the Joker was mostly limited to a scene that didn’t make the final cut of the film, audiences haven’t had much time to connect with this portrayal.
Reeves has explained that this version of the Joker is an early iteration of the character, a predecessor to the fully developed Clown Prince we’re familiar with. Keoghan has hinted at returning to the role, but there haven’t been many reports confirming a significant Joker presence in the film.
It’s likely Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his role as the Joker in The Batman 2, but current information suggests he won’t be the primary antagonist this time, unlike his central role in The Dark Knight.
