James Rolfe, the original creator of the popular web series Angry Video Game Nerd, recently marked his 20th anniversary online by releasing a previously unseen video from 2006.
James Rolfe started the popular web series, The Angry Video Game Nerd, years ago. It began as ‘The Angry Nintendo Nerd,’ where Rolfe, wearing a white shirt and pocket protector filled with pens, reviewed classic NES games.
Honestly, the best part of watching the series was seeing James lose it over those old games! He’d get so frustrated, and his swearing was legendary – seriously creative and hilarious, even when he was clearly struggling. It just made the whole thing so much more entertaining!
The series eventually became known as The Angry Video Game Nerd, and James started featuring many guest stars, like Macaulay Culkin, Gilbert Gottfried, the band GWAR, and Scott the Woz. He was also a pioneer, directing and releasing his own movie based on the character—well before YouTubers such as Chris Stuckman and Markiplier began making their own films for theaters.
To mark its 20th anniversary on YouTube on April 6th, the channel shared a previously unreleased episode from its early days as the Angry Nintendo Nerd.
Creators celebrate AVGN for 20 years of YouTube success
Rolfe marked the 20th anniversary of the JamesNintendoNerd YouTube channel with a reflective post on X. He noted the channel was created on April 6, 2006, though they started uploading videos on April 8. “It makes me feel old,” he wrote, “but I’m proud to have been one of the people who started it.”
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the JamesNintendoNerd YouTube channel! It launched on April 6th, 2006, though our first videos went live on April 8th. It’s amazing to think how long ago that was, and I’m proud to have been part of it from the beginning. We’ve got a special treat coming soon, so keep an eye out!

My friend Mike Matei actually reminded everyone that he was the one who originally built the channel way back when, even before I started making my 8-bit games. It’s cool to look back and remember where it all started!
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the JamesNintendoNerd channel! I never imagined when I started it that we’d still be creating content after all these years. I have some special things planned for this week to celebrate. Thank you to James Rolfe (@cinemassacre), Mike Matei (@schottr), and especially all of you fans for your continued support.

Can you believe it? Today marks the 20th anniversary of my JamesNintendoNerd channel! Honestly, when I first started it, I never imagined we’d still be at it after all this time!
Other creators celebrated the channel’s achievement. Pat Contri, known as Pat The NES Punk, said it was amazing to have a successful YouTube channel for two decades, and even more impressive to create and maintain a character for that long in any form of media.
YouTuber Conner The Waffle shared that he first found the Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) in 2008, when he was in middle school, and it had a lasting impact on his life and his channel. He believes many others wouldn’t be where they are today without James, the creator of AVGN.
To mark the occasion, James shared a video from 2006 of him reviewing the NES Miracle Piano – a unique game that came with a piano-shaped controller intended to help people learn how to play the instrument.
The YouTuber explained that he originally didn’t like how the episode turned out and had only kept it as unedited video for two decades. He later featured the piano in a different video about NES accessories, making the old footage unnecessary.
After holding onto it for a long time, I figured you might be interested in seeing this old piece of ‘nerd’ history, so I’ve finally made some edits and am sharing it now.
It’s not hard to understand why this track stayed hidden for so long – it lacked James’s usual passionate energy and didn’t really connect with either the piano keyboard or the game it was meant for.
It really shows how far things have come – both James’ videos and the technology used to make them. The video has that raw, spontaneous feel common in the early days of YouTube.
