The Marvel Cinematic Universe first brought heroes together in 2012 with The Avengers, a film that proved why Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America are considered Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Last year, the Fantastic Four joined the MCU, and fans are now eagerly awaiting the arrival of the X-Men. Jake Schreier is directing their first movie, a role he earned after successfully directing Thunderbolts – the most recent team to assemble in the MCU. However, it remains to be seen exactly what his plans are for the X-Men’s debut.
Hugh Jackman returned as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine, and several actors who previously played X-Men characters are reprising those roles in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Now, with a new X-Men movie planned, the big question is how much it will rely on bringing back familiar actors versus introducing new ones.
While promoting Season 2 of Beef with MovieWeb, Schreier didn’t share many details about the new project. However, he did mention that he and Kevin Feige are planning a fresh beginning for the franchise.
Okay, so we’re really trying to reinvent things here, give the whole property a fresh start. Kevin’s been the driving force behind that, constantly asking how we can expand the universe in interesting ways. And honestly, it is a huge world to play with! I’ve spent the last year diving back into the source material – everything from Chris Claremont’s original run to the incredible stuff Grant Morrison did. It’s been a deep dive, and we’re hoping to build something truly new within that foundation.
This world is full of fascinating perspectives, and that richness is simply part of what makes it feel real and expansive. We wanted to explore lesser-seen aspects of this world – areas that haven’t been fully developed in other films – so we could create something fresh and original.
Besides Doomsday, which will bring back James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, and other familiar faces from the X-Men films, no new X-Men characters have been confirmed for the upcoming movie. Previously, casting director Sarah Halley Finn helped Steven Yeun land a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after working with him on Season 1 of Beef. Yeun was originally cast as The Sentry in Thunderbolts, but had to leave the project because of conflicts in his schedule.
Steven Yeun has said he’d be interested in appearing in a superhero movie, and insider Jason Schreier suggests it’s still possible he could join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially as a character other than the one previously discussed.
I think Steven is a fantastic actor, and I’d always be interested in finding roles for him – though I don’t have anything concrete in mind right now.
Since Beef Season 2 will feature a completely different story and new characters, a potential team-up between Steven Yeun and Ali Wong—even if it were to happen within the Marvel Cinematic Universe—won’t be happening right away. We’ll have to wait to see if they ever work together again.
