Crimson Desert has arrived, and Pearl Abyss has truly exceeded expectations. This expansive RPG immerses you in a breathtaking world, offering complete freedom to explore. Many players are already calling it a contender for the best open-world RPG of the last ten years.
Some people are doubtful about how good the game really is, but I think Crimson Desert deserves recognition as a fantastic RPG. And for those skeptics, let me start with a simple reason: you can pet the cat and the dog!
7. Freedom to Explore
Go Where You Want

While a huge open world isn’t essential for a fantastic RPG, it definitely adds to the experience, and Crimson Desert boasts a very large one. Best of all, you’re completely free to roam and explore as much as you like.
Right from the start, you can explore the game’s world, solve puzzles, battle enemies, and uncover hidden secrets. There’s so much to see and do that it’s easy to lose track of time and forget about the main story.
One of the best things about Crimson Desert is that you can enjoy yourself without even following the main storyline. The game is fun simply by exploring and interacting with the world around you.
6. No Hand Holding
Be Gone Yellow Paint
Many players have become frustrated with games that oversimplify things, constantly guiding them and preventing them from figuring things out on their own. It’s rare to find a game that simply presents a goal and lets you achieve it however you choose.
Crimson Desert starts with a helpful tutorial, but quickly lets you explore freely, offering assistance only when you really need it.
The game doesn’t guide you with bright colors or clear instructions on where to go or what to do. You’re allowed to explore and find your own way to the goal, whether that means tackling a challenging climb or sticking to the easier route.
5. Tons of Detail
It’s the Details That Matter
Have you really explored Crimson Desert? Not just the landscape, but the little things you can do within it? If you pay close attention, you’ll be surprised by what you discover.
You can create ice by freezing water, and then melt it using fire. Additionally, if a pet is standing on ice, it could become frozen itself.
Crimson Desert is filled with small, thoughtful details that really enhance the overall experience, demonstrating Pearl Abyss’s commitment to quality.
4. Pet Companions
You Have to Have Pets
Honestly, I’ve noticed animals are in pretty much every RPG now, and it feels strange when they’re missing. It’s gotten to the point where there’s a whole community of us who immediately ask if we can pet the dog in any game we start playing – it’s a legit feature request at this point!
In Crimson Desert, you can have animal companions that will follow you and even collect items. They’re not essential to gameplay, but they definitely enhance the experience.
A great feature is the ability to collect up to 30 animal companions. You can only have one with you at a time, so you’ll need to switch them out often.
3. World Scale
It’s Substantial
Let’s shift our focus from specific details to the bigger picture. Globally, we can identify five key regions, starting with Hernand.
Typically, these areas would feel deserted, as if uninhabited. However, Crimson Desert impressively populates its vast world with life, and the intensity of battles matches the game’s large scale.
Capturing locations in this RPG requires intense battles against numerous enemies, culminating in a showdown with their leader. The game’s vast and detailed world truly sets it apart as a modern classic.
2. Hidden Secrets
Look For Them
It’s frustrating when open-world RPGs lack depth, but Crimson Desert avoids that problem. As we’ve already seen, the game is full of life, and discovering its hidden secrets adds even more to the experience.

The world is full of easily missed secrets. For example, you might not even realize there’s a whole quest to get the Frostcursed armor – I didn’t for a while!
While exploring during a quest, I stumbled upon a chest containing an elk hood. This RPG really captures that feeling of wonder and discovery that many of us experienced when we first played role-playing games, and it’s truly excellent.
1. Not Correct, but Complete
The Puzzle is Solved
I wasn’t immediately impressed with Crimson Desert, but once I started tackling its puzzles and discovered there wasn’t just one right way to solve them, I became completely hooked.
I figured out a puzzle by using a pot to pick up and move a stone block, which allowed me to clear the room. It wasn’t the typical solution, but it worked!
I then understood that Crimson Desert offers many ways to solve its puzzles, highlighting the game’s flexibility and allowing for creative problem-solving – and that’s what really made it stand out to me.
