HBO’s Gritty New Time-Jumping Thriller Series From Baby Reindeer Creator Unveiled In New Half Man Trailer

The trailer for Richard Gadd’s Half Manhas been released.

Following the surprising hit of Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd returns with Half Man. The limited series, which premiered in April 2024, earned six Emmy Awards and sparked widespread conversation. While it starts as a seemingly unusual story about stalking, it quickly unfolds into a much more complex narrative, drawing inspiration from Gadd’s personal life.

As a huge fan of Baby Reindeer, I was thrilled to see the trailer for Richard Gadd’s new series, Half Man. It’s been about two years since Baby Reindeer really took off, and this trailer gives a good look at the show, including Jamie Bell playing Gadd’s brother, who he’s apparently not close to.

The new six-part drama series will launch on HBO and HBO Max in the U.S., Europe, and Latin America, with the first episode premiering on Thursday, April 23rd. Viewers in the U.K. and Scotland can watch it on the BBC. You can get a sneak peek with the trailer, which is available below.

What To Know About Half Man

In Half Man, Gadd plays the character of Ruben, alongside Bell who plays his brother, Niall. The story begins at Niall’s wedding, which quickly feels unsettling for Ruben. Gadd portrays a tense and uncomfortable Ruben, and the atmosphere soon escalates into violence. This event then flashes back to the 1980s and continues forward to the present day.

I’m really excited about the cast they’ve assembled for ‘Half Man’! Mitchell Robertson and Stuart Campbell are going to be fantastic as young Niall and Ruben, and Neve McIntosh is perfect as Niall’s mother, Lori. Marianne McIvor will be playing Ruben’s mom, Maura, which is also great casting. And I was thrilled to hear Jamie Bell is joining the project – especially since he’s also been confirmed for the ‘Peaky Blinders’ sequel as Tommy Shelby’s son! It’s a really strong line-up.

Shot on location in Glasgow and directed by Alexandra Brodski and Eshref Reybrouck, the series Half Man will delve into the complex relationships between brothers, and examine themes of sex and violence. Though written by and starring Paul Gadd, who also executive produces, the central characters Niall and Ruben aren’t actually related by blood. Gadd has hinted that despite this, their bond is incredibly strong.

How Does The Time Travel Work In Half Man?

The new two-minute trailer features the brothers in scenes from various points in time. It opens with Ruben giving a speech at Niall’s wedding, and Niall looks visibly worried. Throughout the trailer, it’s clear the brothers have a very volatile relationship, and this new project seems to build on the complex themes Gadd first explored in Baby Reindeer, potentially with Half Man serving as a continuation of that story.
