Disney and Lucasfilm are returning to animated Star Wars with Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord, a new series focusing on the popular villain, Maul, voiced by Sam Witwer. Continuing the story from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, this series follows Maul as he tries to restore his criminal organization on a planet outside the Empire’s control. Featuring both familiar and new characters, Shadow Lord promises to be the most detailed look at Maul’s story, giving him a central role after a long absence.
Darth Maul first appeared in The Phantom Menace in 1999, and has since become a significant character in the Star Wars universe through both movies and animated series like The Clone Wars and Rebels. Fans might wonder how much of this existing story they need to know before experiencing Maul’s new solo adventure, and the answer might be surprising.
I recently read an interview with Athena Yvette Portillo, an executive producer on the upcoming Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord series, and it really clarified something for me. She explained that Dave Filoni, who’s creating the show, specifically wanted it to be something anyone could jump into and enjoy. He didn’t want prior Star Wars knowledge to be a barrier! It’s designed as a complete story on its own, so even if you’re brand new to the galaxy far, far away, you can still follow along. She described it as “a story about hope and family,” and that’s a fantastic approach – making Maul’s story accessible to all of us, whether we’re longtime fans or total beginners.
The core of the show lies in its mythological storytelling. From the start, Filoni wanted it to be easily enjoyed by both new and existing fans. The narrative focuses on universal themes of hope and family – whether biological or chosen – and explores conflict through a classic struggle between opposing forces. The story centers on a young woman trained as a Jedi, who then encounters a Sith Lord offering a different path, creating a compelling dynamic and relatable internal struggle for someone still seeking guidance.
Maul has become incredibly popular in recent years, so even people who don’t know much about his past are excited to see his story told. The show will likely provide enough background information for both longtime fans and newcomers to fully understand his journey.
The first two episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord are now available to stream, and they’ve received a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. New episodes will be released every Monday on Disney+ at 12 a.m. Pacific Time / 3 a.m. Eastern Time.
