Apple TV has become the go-to streaming service for science fiction fans. Hit shows like Severance, Foundation, and For All Mankind prove it, and the platform is bringing back another exciting series soon.
I was so excited when Dark Matter first came out on Apple TV in May 2024, and then thrilled when it got renewed just a few months later in August! After that, we hadn’t heard much about when Season 2 would actually arrive. But finally, Apple TV just announced it’s coming on August 28th – I can’t wait!
Dark Matter Season 2 Unveils First Look

Blake Crouch wrote the series of the same name, which launched in 2024 to good reviews. He’s back as the author and creator for Season 2, along with the original cast.
The film Dark Matter features a talented cast, including Joel Edgerton (a Golden Globe nominee) and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly, as well as Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley, and Amanda Brugel.
The second season will have ten episodes, released weekly on Fridays from August 28th to October 30th, 2026.
Along with announcing the release date, Apple TV+ showed off a first look at Season 2, giving viewers a preview of Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton), Daniela Dessen (Jennifer Connelly), their son Charlie (Oakes Fegley), and other characters.
Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter was highly praised by critics, with the original book considered a standout science fiction novel of recent years. As the book approaches its 10th anniversary, Apple TV+’s decision to create a second season – two years after initially renewing the show – feels especially appropriate.
What Happens in Dark Matter?
The first season of Dark Matter centers around Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor, and father, who is suddenly kidnapped and thrust into a different version of his own life while walking home in Chicago. What begins as curiosity quickly turns into a terrifying struggle as he tries to find his way back to his original reality, navigating the bewildering possibilities of all the lives he might have led.
Season two of Apple TV+’s show begins with the Dessens family attempting to build a peaceful life, believing they’ve finally found safety. However, unexpected events force them to flee again. Meanwhile, Jason becomes increasingly fixated on the mysterious Box, and Daniela’s mounting fear threatens the family’s delicate new stability.
I’m completely captivated by what’s happening with Amanda and Ryan – they’re really struggling to find their way back, and I’m so worried for them! Meanwhile, it’s heartbreaking to watch Blair try to thwart someone’s plans, and even more fascinating – and a little scary – to see how determined Leighton is to build this perfect world of theirs. It’s a real clash of wills, and I can’t look away!
As a sci-fi fan, I was really impressed with how well Dark Matter Season 1 was received! It’s rare to see something Apple TV releases that everyone seems to love, because their sci-fi shows can be pretty hit or miss. But this one really broke the mold. Critics and audiences were almost perfectly aligned – it scored an 81% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it an 80% score! It genuinely exceeded my expectations, and it’s great to see something so well-received.
Dark Matter Season 2 premieres on Apple TV on Aug. 28.
