Arc Raiders devs want to add new feature inspired by iconic Star Wars scene

The creators of Arc Raiders want to introduce a new method for defeating the game’s toughest enemies, drawing inspiration from a famous moment in Star Wars.

Each robot enemy in Arc Raiders has a unique way to be defeated, like destroying important parts or hitting vulnerable areas on its body. As players unlock better gear and the game gets updated with new weapons, there are even more ways to take down each robot.

The developers at Embark Studios are planning to expand combat options in their shooter game, adding new ways to fight tough enemies. One of these new methods is inspired by a memorable scene from ‘The Empire Strikes Back’.

Embark dev wants to bring Battle of Hoth to Arc Raiders

Martin Singh-Blom, who leads machine learning research, explained to GamesRadar+ that people directly involved in the game’s physics want to see even more realistic physics incorporated throughout the game.

We’re envisioning a way to immobilize enemies by using ropes to entangle their legs, similar to the speeder bikes tripping rebels on Hoth in Star Wars. Improving how ropes behave in the game would be key to making this work.

Singh-Blom is referencing the famous Star Wars battle where rebels used ropes to trip and disable the massive AT-AT walkers. She suggests a similar tactic – players working together to take down large enemies like The Queen and Matriarch – could be very effective in Arc Raiders.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely to happen in the near future. The designers have indicated that these features aren’t a good fit for the game at this time, but he remains optimistic that they might be possible eventually.

According to Singh-Blom, players are focused on what a game needs to be successful, while developers are often more excited about exploring what new technology allows them to do. The ideal outcome is a balance – pushing creative limits with technology while still making choices that benefit the game itself.

Don’t expect lightsaber-like battles in Arc Raiders anytime soon, but the developers might add them in the future if they can perfect the game’s physics.
