Project Hail Mary directors reveal wild meaning behind Eva’s mysterious tattoo

The movie ‘Project Hail Mary‘ has been a big hit this year, and the filmmakers have now explained the meaning behind the unusual tattoo briefly shown on Eva Stratt at the end. Director Phil Lord and Christopher Miller recently shared the story behind it.

The movie Project Hail Mary has been a major hit, contributing to the strongest first quarter for US movie theaters since theaters reopened after the pandemic.

I’m so glad the movie is still doing well in theaters! It definitely seems like the director’s commentary feature – being able to listen along with the film on the app – is giving it a nice boost. It’s a really cool way to experience the movie, and I think a lot of fans, like me, are taking advantage of it!

Ever since the movie came out, people have been wondering about the meaning of Eva Stratt’s tattoo. Now, the directors have explained what it represents. Be warned: SPOILERS follow…

Project Hail Mary tattoo inspired by Eva Stratt’s imprisonment

The filmmakers – directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and writer Drew Goddard – had to shorten Andy Weir’s novel to keep the movie from being too long.

A secondary storyline follows Eva Stratt’s activities on Earth after Grace’s launch and while she was receiving data from his research probes.

The book depicts a time of international conflict, culminating in Stratt receiving a life sentence for her involvement. While this specific detail wasn’t directly shown in the film, the filmmakers hinted at it through a tattoo on Stratt’s neck in the final scene.

According to Phil Lord, a concept they attempted to include in the movie but ultimately cut was the idea that society fell apart after Grace left for space. He shared this with SlashFilm.

The authorities arrested Sandra and put her on trial, resulting in a prison sentence. She has a tattoo, a suggestion from Andy, that reads, ‘I’ve been in French prison for life.’

The movie tattoo means “life without parole”

Chris Miller clarified that in the final scene set on Earth, where the character receives Grace’s message, she has a small tattoo. It’s a ‘V’ with a line through it, symbolizing ‘life’ with the line representing ‘without parole’.

Andy believed she’d been sentenced to life in prison, but somehow escaped using her contacts. After that, she was essentially a fugitive, still determined to make a difference in the world.

Miller explained that creating a believable and detailed world in a movie comes from including small, mysterious stories. These stories have hints and clues, but aren’t fully explained, suggesting a larger, more complex world beyond what’s shown.
