There’s a huge variety of co-op games available, ranging from large online experiences to easygoing games you can play with a friend on the same couch. But a common frustration is being stuck playing the same characters over and over again.

Luckily, not all co-op games force you to play as a set character. Some let you choose from a selection, while others allow you to build a character exactly how you want. No matter your preference, there’s a game out there to suit you. Here are some of the best co-op games that don’t restrict you to specific characters.

10. Valheim

Customise Your Own Viking Warriors

While the popularity of cooperative survival games has slowed down, Valheim still stands out as a fantastic option for playing with friends. The game’s premise – a Viking warrior who has fallen in battle collecting resources and battling creatures to prove themselves worthy of Valhalla – is a clever and engaging idea.

Valheim is a fantastic game that quickly became a huge success, selling five million copies in just one month, even though it was initially released as an unfinished ‘early access’ title on Steam. I’ve lost countless hours with friends, gathering resources and upgrading our gear to defeat challenging bosses like Fader and The Queen. While all players start as Vikings with similar abilities, you can customize their appearance and create your own unique story, as the game doesn’t assign names or backgrounds.

9. Deep Rock Galactic

Deep Rock Galactic offers a unique gaming experience where you can create and customize your character. Players team up – from one to four people – to complete missions, collect valuable items, and improve their characters with new weapons and skills. Mining has rarely been this fun in a video game!

I’m totally hooked on Deep Rock Galactic! It’s a really fun co-op game where you play as space dwarves, and it’s got this cool roguelike feel. Each class is so different, and teaming up with friends to play as these tough, nameless warriors is where the real fun happens – it’s a super action-packed adventure when you do!

8. V-Rising

Start With A Fresh Vampire

I’m really getting into V-Rising! You start as a vampire with no name – you get to create your own character exactly how you want. The best part is teaming up with friends to explore this huge world with five different areas. We’re building castles, taking down seriously tough bosses, and basically making our own vampire legends. It’s awesome because your choices really shape your story in the game!

V-Rising is a survival game that can be played alone, but I found it much more enjoyable with friends. Survival games are generally better when you can explore and adventure with others, and cooperative play makes particularly challenging games like this one even more fun, especially when tackling tough bosses.

7. Overcooked 2

Characters Don’t Matter, Only Speed

It’s funny how games meant to be fun with friends can sometimes cause arguments! I’ve had plenty of hilarious – and frustrating – moments playing chaotic games like Overcooked 2. Looking back, it’s not about how you play, but who you were yelling at while playing that really makes the memories.

I’ve played a lot of party games with silly characters that are just fun to mess around with, but Overcooked 2 really stands out! It’s got this amazing, bright, and chaotic style, and it’s SO much bigger than the first one – tons more levels, restaurants, and crazy challenges. Honestly, since it came out, it’s become one of my go-to games to play with friends – it’s a modern classic for a reason!

6. Phasmophobia

Ghost Hunting Is For Everybody & Anybody

Phasmophobia is a ghost hunting game best played with friends, where you might end up becoming a ghost yourself! It was destined to be popular, offering a lot of laughs and consistently bringing players back for more, even if they don’t always play it quite right.

Despite a simple premise and lack of a strong story, Phasmophobia is a fantastic game to play with friends. You don’t really build a character or follow a larger narrative; instead, the fun comes from tackling individual investigations with others, making it a uniquely replayable experience.

5. Minecraft

The Ultimate No-Story Co-Op Experience

Minecraft offers endless ways to play, but it’s increasingly become a game about playing with others. You can team up with friends, family, or even people online to explore huge worlds and have unique adventures. Interestingly, Minecraft doesn’t focus on your character’s identity – it has a simple look that you can customize with tons of different skins.

As a huge fan, I honestly think Minecraft takes the crown for the best co-op experience out there. Whether you’re just chilling and building amazing things with friends, or trying to survive a seriously challenging world together, it’s always a blast. What’s incredible is how much you can do in the game, and the constant updates just keep making it better. It’s wild to think a game with almost no real story or set characters can be so unbelievably good – it might even be the best game ever made!

4. Diablo IV

Classic Local Co-Op RPG Action

Diablo games have always been designed with cooperative play in mind. It’s become harder to find modern games you can easily play with someone in the same room, but Diablo has consistently offered that option. Thankfully, local co-op is making a comeback, and Diablo was ahead of the curve.

One of the best things about this series continues with this newest game. Players face off against Lilith, Mephisto’s daughter, in a dark fantasy action RPG where you can choose from various character classes and enjoy classic dungeon-crawling gameplay. I always eagerly pick up new Diablo games, especially when I’m looking for a fun game to play with a friend.

3. Monster Hunter: World

Ultimate Nameless Character Growth

The Monster Hunter series is unique. Despite many games following a similar pattern – hunting monsters for better gear to take on even tougher monsters – it consistently keeps fans engaged. The series really hit its stride with Monster Hunter: World, offering a particularly immersive experience.

Okay, so this game doesn’t have split-screen or local co-op, which is a bummer, but honestly, playing with friends online is way more fun – it’s how I and a lot of other people like to play. You play as these characters called Hunters, and there is a little bit of backstory, but you don’t really have a specific role to play, which gives you freedom to just jump in and hunt!
