Japan’s idea to power Earth involves a 6,800-mile ring around the Moon

Japan is proposing a way to provide Earth with a virtually limitless source of clean energy. Their plan involves constructing a massive structure encircling the moon, covered in approximately 6,800 miles of solar panels.

An ambitious energy plan proposed by Japan’s Shimizu Corporation – originally discussed in 2011 – is gaining renewed attention thanks to recent reports. The concept involves harnessing the Moon’s energy to power Earth.

The Luna Ring is a proposed project to build a massive, 6,800-mile ring around the Moon. If built, it could theoretically provide continuous sunlight directed towards Earth, eliminating our reliance on fossil fuels like coal and oil.

Whether this will actually happen remains to be seen. Right now, it’s just an ambitious idea. However, company president Tetsuji Yoshida has stated that continued research could make it a real possibility.

Japan’s plan to build solar ring around the Moon

The Luna Ring project aims to create an endless supply of clean energy for our planet. Yoshida explains that solar panels in space could generate twenty times more energy than the same number of panels on Earth.

When considering the Moon, we don’t have to worry about things like clouds or an atmosphere getting in the way. Unlike Earth, where solar energy production stops at night, a complete ring around the Moon would allow it to continuously collect sunlight.

Sunlight would be captured on the Moon and turned into electricity. This electricity would then be beamed to Earth as microwaves, using lasers to focus the energy onto receptors. These receptors would convert the beamed energy back into electricity, providing power for our planet.

While the concept is promising, a lot of the necessary technology isn’t fully developed yet. It’s also true that no one has ever tried to build something this ambitious. The actual construction would need highly sophisticated robots, operated by people back on Earth, to keep things as safe as possible.

Is a lunar ring actually in the works? Not right now – Japan isn’t building one. However, the concept has been suggested, and the company leader believes it’s technically feasible with enough funding and resources.
