A trend in gaming is that many popular series are releasing new games less frequently. However, LEGO is an exception, consistently releasing new titles, including both original games and those based on popular licenses.
I’ve been playing LEGO games for, like, thirty years – seriously, I’ve gotten through most of them. But looking back, a few felt a little overlooked when they first came out. We’re in a different world now, with every new game getting tons of attention and hype. It makes me wonder… were there LEGO games that just launched at the wrong time and deserve another look?
8. LEGO Dimensions
An Ambitious Crossover, A Decade Too Early

LEGO Dimensions was a huge crossover bringing together characters from many different franchises, and it deserved a bigger launch. Instead, it arrived in 2015, trying to follow the popular ‘toys-to-life’ trend, and was released alongside other LEGO games, getting somewhat lost in the shuffle.
Releasing a trailer now, before the premiere of Avengers: Doomsday, would be a smart move. A trailer showcasing all these connected franchises right before such a massive and highly anticipated film could have been really impactful.
LEGO Dimensions did okay when it first came out, but it could have been more successful if it hadn’t been released so quickly after games like Skylanders. I really loved playing it, and it was full of fun hidden references to things like The Matrix, Half-Life, and even the Bible!
7. LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues
An Extra Film & More Nostalgia, Please
One challenge with LEGO games adapting popular franchises is that those franchises are always expanding with new installments. For example, LEGO Indiana Jones 2 was released only a year after the original game, which wasn’t ideal timing. While it did include the film Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the added content wasn’t substantial enough to significantly improve the game.
Considering the success of the fifth Indiana Jones film and the enduring popularity of the franchise, it’s surprising we haven’t seen a new LEGO game in that style, similar to how The Skywalker Saga revitalized Star Wars. This older LEGO game was genuinely one of the best, and doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
I honestly couldn’t believe how much better this game was than the first! I went in expecting something pretty similar, but the world was massively improved, and the new vehicles and levels were just incredible. It totally blew me away and really took things to the next level.
6. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4
Bigger Sales Could Come From Rebuilt Fan Hype
The first LEGO Hogwarts game didn’t perform as well as hoped when it was released in 2010. At the time, fans were more interested in the final Harry Potter movies, not a game focused on the earlier years. However, if that same game – with all the features fans enjoyed then and still want in Harry Potter games today – were released now, while interest in the early years of the story is growing, it could have been a huge success and a classic licensed game.
The thrill of attending classes, mastering spells, and exploring a vast world remains a highlight of this game series. Hogwarts Legacy delivered much of what Harry Potter fans desired, though it lacked the established stories and characters we know and love. Had this game been released outside the flurry of LEGO games from around 2010, it likely would have been even more popular.
5. LEGO Lord Of The Rings
Huge Scope That Would Have Been Bigger Today
The LEGO games have always been great, but The Skywalker Saga really demonstrated how much potential they have. While LEGO Lord of the Rings successfully recreated iconic locations from Middle-earth, a modern version could offer a much bigger and more expansive open world.
As a big fan of Middle-earth, I wasn’t disappointed when I first played this game. However, it was clear where it could be better – the long loading screens between areas really disrupted the flow, and aren’t really needed in modern games.
Fans of The Lord of the Rings are always eager for new content. With so many recent games, movies, and TV shows based on the series, a big game adaptation of the original trilogy could have been a huge hit recently – something it didn’t quite achieve back in 2012.
4. LEGO City Undercover
Grand Theft Auto Hype Is Maxed Out
While we haven’t seen a LEGO version of Grand Theft Auto, LEGO City Undercover offered a similar experience. It came out in 2013, when excitement for Grand Theft Auto 5 was still strong, but that pales in comparison to the massive anticipation building for the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6.
LEGO City Undercover, while not a failure, didn’t sell as well as other LEGO games. Releasing it now could have taken advantage of the current excitement for games like Grand Theft Auto and brought more attention to this beloved title. A major hurdle at launch was that it was only available on the Wii U, which limited its potential audience.
3. LEGO Worlds
A Bigger & Better Minecraft Alternative Could Have Been Huge
Before games like Minecraft became popular, LEGO was the go-to for building with blocks. When LEGO Worlds came out in 2017, trying to compete with Minecraft, it didn’t quite take off. But the recent success of LEGO Fortnite proves that LEGO games inspired by other popular titles can be a huge hit.
Had LEGO Worlds launched today with expanded features, it could have become as popular as Minecraft. LEGO is a hugely recognizable brand, and many Minecraft players feel the game hasn’t evolved enough recently. This presented a real chance for LEGO Worlds to become a dominant game for many years.
When I played LEGO Worlds, I could see it had a lot of promise. I think a more ambitious version of the game could have been a real contender to replace Minecraft as the top game in the genre.
2. LEGO Jurassic World
Could Have Summed Up Two Full Generations

20150312122052
Even though the Jurassic World movies haven’t always been popular with audiences, it would have felt satisfying to include all six or seven films from the entire franchise in a single, large game. Unfortunately, this fantastic LEGO game only featured four of the movies, and those films deserved to be included more fully.
By 2015, LEGO’s initial success with games based on popular licenses was fading. Fans weren’t anticipating a truly outstanding game adaptation of a major franchise. Had a comprehensive game, covering multiple movies from that series, been released then – before LEGO ever ventured into the world of Jurassic Park – it likely would have been one of LEGO’s most successful games to date.
1. LEGO Avengers
Poorly Chosen Timing Reduced Impact
A LEGO Avengers game seemed like a great concept. However, launching it in 2015, so soon after the massive success of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, wasn’t the best move. Fans were surprised to see a new take on the Marvel universe based on the movies, rather than a continuation of the story and world established in the previous LEGO Marvel game.
LEGO initially moved away from Marvel themes, but later realized this was a misstep with LEGO Marvel Super-Heroes 2. A LEGO game consistently focused on the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have been incredibly popular, given the MCU’s massive success and cultural impact.
Imagine if a LEGO Marvel game covering all the Infinity Saga movies came out now – it would be incredible! I enjoyed the original game when it first launched, but it felt rushed, like LEGO was quickly trying to capitalize on the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It had the potential to be so much more. With a new LEGO Batman game in development, proving there’s still huge demand for LEGO superhero games, I’m hopeful we’ll see another LEGO Marvel game in the future that truly delivers on that potential.
