Stephen King’s stories have been adapted for film and television over a hundred times, making it hard to choose the best one. Generally, the longer and more intricate his novels are, the better they translate to miniseries format, as these adaptations tend to capture the details and character arcs more effectively. A prime example is the 1994 four-part miniseries, which originally aired on ABC and ran for over six hours.
As a big Stephen King fan, I remember being completely hooked by The Stand. It’s his longest book, over 1,100 pages, and tells this epic story of a battle between good and evil after a devastating plague wipes out almost everyone on Earth. The TV miniseries was really well-done – it even won Emmys for makeup and sound! While critics and viewers generally liked it – it has around a 67% and 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively – it was always clear that squeezing such a massive story into just four episodes was a huge challenge. But honestly, even after 32 years, no other Stephen King miniseries has ever impressed me quite as much as The Stand did.
The Stand’s Budget Matched the Book’s Gargantuan Story
With a budget of nearly $28 million, The Stand was a very expensive TV event for its time. Beyond hiring director Mick Garris, known for films like Critters 2, the miniseries featured a star-studded cast of acclaimed actors, many of whom had received Emmy and Academy Award nominations.
The miniseries featured a strong cast including Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Jamey Sheridan, Ruby Lee, Ossie Davis, Miguel Ferrer, Matt Frewer, and Shawnee Smith. It also included fun and unexpected cameo appearances by well-known actors like Sam Raimi, Ed Harris, Jeff Goldblum, Kathy Bates, and John Landis.
Beyond its strong performances and well-developed characters, The Stand is particularly remembered for its groundbreaking special effects. Creating a realistic depiction of a global pandemic for television was a major challenge, especially when digital effects weren’t commonly used and often looked unconvincing. However, The Stand benefited from an award-winning effects team with experience on blockbuster films like Jurassic Park, Starship Troopers, Sleepy Hollow, Jumanji, Deadpool, and Hereditary.
It’s rare to see this much effort put into a traditional TV event these days, as big budgets are now usually reserved for streaming services like HBO Max and Disney+. Though some elements of this miniseries feel a little old after thirty years, it largely holds up well, and the sheer amount of money and dedication involved proves how truly spectacular events like this can be.
Hollywood Has Been Unable to Recreate The Stand’s Success
It had been twenty years since the 1994 series when Warner Bros. began considering options for a new multi-film project. In the early 2010s, as two-part movies became popular, several directors were contacted. Ben Affleck was initially chosen to direct, and David Kajganich, known for The Terror, was writing the script. However, Affleck had to leave due to other commitments, and the project was ultimately cancelled even after Scott Cooper was considered as a replacement.
Although plans for films based on The Stand were put on hold in 2017 and 2019, the huge financial success of other horror movies made a big-screen adaptation seem more possible.
In 2020, a new miniseries of The Stand premiered on Paramount+, aiming to recapture the success of previous adaptations. Josh Boone and Benjamin Cavell, known for Justified, led the project, assembling a talented cast including James Marsden and Whoopi Goldberg. Despite strong performances and impressive practical effects, the series received mostly lukewarm reviews. Critics and viewers found the storytelling disjointed and confusing due to its non-chronological structure.
Despite a recent adaptation, fans of Stephen King’s work are still hoping for a version that lives up to the popular 1994 miniseries. Now, Paramount Pictures is planning another attempt to bring the 1100-page story to the screen as a film, and a director has been chosen to lead the project.
