Although the Arrowverse shows on The CW featured many heroes for nearly ten years, Batman was never fully introduced. It would have been interesting to see the network’s take on the iconic detective.
Batman first appeared in comics in 1939, making him a truly long-lasting and iconic hero. However, he was surprisingly missing from many of the biggest DC Universe adaptations. Even when shows like Batwoman featured Gotham City, Bruce Wayne—the man behind the mask—didn’t appear.
Oliver Queen is often compared to Batman within the Arrowverse, and many viewers hoped to see the actual Batman appear with heroes like The Flash and Superman. But how would Batman have fit into that world, and what would his interactions with the other heroes have been like?
The Arrowverse Batman Would Have Had A Rivalry With Arrow
A Batman from the Arrowverse would have undoubtedly clashed with Oliver Queen. Stephen Amell’s portrayal of the Green Arrow was so central that the universe essentially took its name from his show. But Bruce Wayne isn’t the type to follow anyone else’s lead; he’d naturally assume a leadership role in any group.
Batman is often portrayed as a natural leader in comics and cartoons. Though he sometimes follows Superman’s lead, he prefers to be at the forefront, using his strategic skills to inspire other heroes. However, his dynamic with heroes like Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) can be uneven, as Oliver tends to be quick to anger, while Batman remains calm and collected.
Honestly, it seemed like Bruce sometimes had mixed feelings about Oliver. He wouldn’t hesitate to point out problems with Oliver’s plans, but he kept pushing forward with his own ideas. Over time, though, he really started to gain the respect of the other heroes, and I think that’s what mattered to him.
The CW Could Have Created A Unique Batman Story
It’s been a long time since Batman starred in a live-action TV series – the last one was in the 1960s with Adam West playing a famously playful version of the character. More recently, the show Gotham tried to tell the story of Bruce Wayne’s beginnings, but it focused on the time before he became Batman. Because of this, the show often centered around Jim Gordon, with Bruce Wayne playing a secondary role.
Honestly, what I really wanted from that universe was a deeper dive into Bruce Wayne – a longer story where we could see him grow and change as a hero, battling a whole roster of his classic enemies. While Batwoman did a decent job showing us a corner of Gotham, it felt disconnected from the worlds of The Flash and Arrow – like it existed in its own separate reality.
Putting Batman in the same universe as shows like Supergirl or The Flash would have created a fascinating take on the character for television. Unfortunately, this exciting possibility never happened, and it remains a significant missed opportunity for The CW.
Superman & Lois Gives A Perfect Template Of How The Arrowverse’s Batman Could Have Looked
Originally, Superman & Lois was planned to be part of the same universe as shows like Arrow and The Flash. However, as those other series ended, Superman & Lois evolved into its own unique story, focusing on a more grown-up Superman who moved his family back to Smallville hoping to give his children a similar childhood to the one he had.
It would have been interesting to see Batman in a less common storyline, one that truly explored new territory for the character. The story could have featured an older, more seasoned Batman mentoring a new hero, or it could have shown him still tirelessly fighting crime in Gotham alone – either approach would have been compelling.
I’ve been really impressed with how Superman & Lois took the Superman story and did something fresh, diving into aspects of the character we rarely see, even in the comics. It’s a shame though, because with Batman, every new movie or show feels like the same story retold. We haven’t really seen any significant growth or new angles with that character, which is disappointing.
The DCU Needs To Get Batman Right (Unlike The Arrowverse)
Although a Batman TV show within the Arrowverse would have been exciting, finding the right time to include the character would have been tricky. The other shows hinted at Bruce Wayne and Gotham’s dangerous nature, but without a solid plan for a proper introduction, it could have felt awkward and out of place.
There’s a growing possibility we’ll finally see a truly compelling live-action Batman. With the new DC Universe actively building a large, connected world and including Batman from the beginning, fans are hopeful for a Batman story that moves beyond the familiar origin tale and explores the character’s full potential.
Batman’s first major appearance in the new DC Universe will be in The Brave and the Bold, and it sounds like this will be an experienced version of the character. The story will feature him training his son, Damien Wayne, to become a hero, which is something fans wished the earlier Arrowverse series had explored. Hopefully, this new take will give Bruce Wayne the compelling portrayal he deserves.
While it would have been fun to see Batman join the Arrowverse – and imagine crossovers with shows like The Flash and Supergirl, even with some potential clashes with Oliver Queen – it likely wouldn’t have been as impactful as the direction the new DCU is taking. Still, it’s good to know the character has a promising future, even though he won’t be appearing in the Arrowverse.
