The 8-episode Netflix thriller featuring Mae Martin quickly became one of the platform’s most unusual shows. Netflix has a history of offering thrillers that are both boundary-pushing and explore unique ideas. However, “Wayward” stands out even among these unconventional stories, truly surprising viewers with its originality.
This Netflix thriller creates a captivating and unsettling mood in just eight episodes. Wayward deliberately keeps viewers off balance, which is a key part of what makes it different from typical thrillers that stick to predictable storylines.
Wayward Is One Of Netflix’s Most Unsettling Thrillers
I have to say, from the very beginning, Wayward really got under my skin. It’s set in this seemingly perfect small town called Tall Pines, but there’s a constant feeling that something isn’t quite right. The show centers around Alex Dempsey, played by Mae Martin, and a group of people connected to Tall Pines Academy – a school for teens who’ve had a rough go of things. It quickly becomes clear that everyone has secrets, and the idyllic setting is just a facade.
Tall Pines appears to be a charming town full of friendly people, but Alex quickly realizes something sinister is hidden beneath its perfect exterior. The show, Wayward, intentionally keeps viewers guessing, focusing more on creating a sense of unease than providing immediate explanations.
Throughout the series, we learn that Tall Pines isn’t a typical town – it’s a cult made up of graduates from the local academy. The cult leader, Evelyn (Toni Collette), prevents residents from having children to maintain her control over them. One of the show’s strengths, Wayward, is its ability to make viewers constantly wonder what’s real, and it achieves this by subtly twisting how the main characters perceive events.
Though Wayward has many disturbing scenes – from its violent crimes to the strange therapy it portrays – what viewers really remember is the show’s bleak ending. Alex chooses to remain in a town dominated by a dangerous cult, and Leila continues to attend the harmful Tall Pines Academy, despite everything.
Why Wayward Is One of Netflix’s Best Limited Series
Netflix offers a fantastic selection of limited series across many genres. While it might not be the most well-known, Wayward has proven itself to be one of the platform’s strongest offerings. Its concise, 8-episode format allowed for a tightly focused story without unnecessary detours.
Despite being a short series, Wayward features well-developed characters who all experience significant growth. Alex begins as a naive individual wanting to escape a troubled town, but ultimately chooses to stay connected to its people. The close bond between Abbie (Sydney Topliffe) and Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind) evolves, leading them down separate paths. Even minor characters are given enough depth to feel integral to the story.
What Critics Thought About Wayward
Like most TV series, Wayward has both good and bad points. It wasn’t consistently strong throughout its run, a fact noted by both critics and viewers. While critics gave it a fairly positive score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences were less impressed, giving it a rating of only 46%.
Despite its flaws, the show Wayward received generally positive reviews. Lucy Mangan of The Guardian described it as “stylish and hugely watchable,” and Cristina Escobar from Roger Ebert highlighted the strong performances from the cast. While the Netflix series isn’t perfect, many critics found its biggest weaknesses were a lack of a clear focus and a tendency to overcomplicate things.
