Fast & Furious Spy Racers: The Animated Series Breaks Franchise Rules

If you think the Fast & Furious movies are over-the-top, you should check out the Spy Racers animated series. It takes the craziness to a whole new level! The Fast & Furious franchise was already known for unbelievable stunts – like stopping a nuclear missile by hand, swinging a car through the jungle, and even skydiving with muscle cars – and Spy Racers just throws all logic out the window.

Let’s be real, this is a movie series about car thieves who ended up in space. For years, people joked about whether Fast & Furious would ever send its characters into orbit – it’s similar to all the old jokes about Rocky Balboa eventually fighting someone from Mars. Well, the series actually did it, sending Roman and Tej into space in a customized spaceship.

Compared to the main Fast & Furious movies, the animated spin-off, Fast & Furious Spy Racers, was wild and over-the-top. It aired for six seasons on Netflix from 2019 to 2021, filling a content gap between Hobbs & Shaw and the delayed release of F9. Fans really enjoyed it at the time.

Fast & Furious Spy Racers Is Even Wilder Than The Movies

The show Fast & Furious Spy Racers starts with a simple idea, similar to the first Fast & Furious movie: a group of teen street racers are asked to go undercover and take down a criminal organization. However, it quickly becomes even wilder and more unbelievable than the movies it’s based on.

Bret Haaland, who previously developed TV series based on DreamWorks’ The Penguins of Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, was a great fit for this project. He realized the Fast & Furious films, despite being live-action with a lot of computer-generated effects, share a similar over-the-top, cartoon-like energy with his previous work, and he embraced that quality.

With Fast & Furious films, even outlandish stunts like going to space or endless airport chases need to look believable on screen. But when creating ideas for Spy Racers, like a mask granting superpowers, Haaland didn’t worry about realism at all.

As a fan, I have to say, Spy Racers really threw some wild ideas into the Fast & Furious universe! We’re talking about cars that can go underwater, animal partners helping out, and seriously cool gadgets. I mean, a gravity-defying backpack? Invisible cars? And they even had tech that reminded me of the ghost-busting equipment from Ghostbusters! Plus, they invented this crazy new VR drag race. It’s completely over-the-top, but honestly, it’s a blast!

Spy Racers Has A Higher RT Score Than Any Of The Fast & Furious Films

The animated series Fast & Furious Spy Racers has received a remarkably high score of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, actually surpassing all of the live-action Fast & Furious films. While movies like Furious 7 (81%) and Fast Five (77%) came close, Spy Racers edges them out with a 5% higher rating.

While the Fast & Furious films are entertaining, the animated series Spy Racers takes the over-the-top action to a whole new level. The movies seem realistic in comparison! Spy Racers embraces the franchise’s inherently cartoonish nature – where everyday people survive incredible stunts and vehicles defy logic – and fully leans into it as a cartoon.

If you’re starting to feel bored with the recent Fast & Furious movies, Spy Racers might be exactly what you need to get excited about the series again. It’s a lot more imaginative and fresh than the last few films.
