Star Trek is a legendary science fiction series, but a new space opera coming to Prime Video, based on a popular book series, has the potential to become the next big thing. There’s truly nothing quite like Star Trek, a franchise that began in 1966 and has successfully evolved over the years while remaining true to its core values.
I grew up watching the original two Star Trek series, and they really sparked my love for science fiction. But it looks like fans might not have many new Star Trek shows to watch on television for a while.
The world of Star Trek is thriving in comic books, and there’s hope for a new movie with Star Trek: Origins still being developed. However, the TV side of things is struggling. All of the current Star Trek shows have been canceled, leaving no new series in production for the first time in years. Thankfully, there’s one show that might help fans get their Star Trek fix.
Consider Phlebas Has Enough In Common With Star Trek To Replace It
Let me be clear: I don’t believe Star Trek will ever completely disappear. History shows us the franchise always finds a way to return, and its impact on science fiction television is lasting and undeniable.
With the show ending, we’ll likely need something new to watch. A great option would be the TV series based on Iain M. Banks’ Consider Phlebas, the first book in his popular Culture universe.
Both Consider Phlebas and Star Trek tell stories with similar themes, which makes the new show a good option to watch in the meantime. The Culture, a society depicted in Consider Phlebas, unites many different species in a world where everyone has what they need. This is a lot like the United Federation of Planets in Star Trek.
Both Star Trek and the Culture novels include intelligent artificial intelligences. These stories also showcase a diverse array of alien species, each with unique cultures and different levels of technological development. The technology depicted in the Culture books and Star Trek is remarkably similar. Furthermore, the conflict between the Idrians and the Culture in Consider Phlebas closely mirrors the Dominion War storyline from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
However, the two works have very different feels. Star Trek is much more hopeful than Consider Phlebas. Star Trek generally emphasizes the good in people and the importance of working together, often creating a sense of curiosity and excitement. In contrast, Consider Phlebas is far more skeptical about human nature and whether people are truly good.
One of the best things about adapting the Culture series is the sheer amount of content available. With ten novels already written, the show could run for many years without needing to create original stories. For at least a decade, and likely much longer, the adaptation can draw directly from the existing books, avoiding the risk of going beyond the source material.
Prime Video Has An Impressive Lineup Of Sci-Fi Shows In Development
Prime Video has a lot of exciting science fiction shows coming soon, including Consider Phlebas. This year will also see the premieres of Blade Runner 2099, Spider-Noir, and a new anime series based on Ghost in the Shell. Fans are eagerly awaiting these shows, which have the potential to become defining works in their genres.
Prime Video has renewed Fallout for a third season, following the success of the show. It’s so popular, in fact, that a physical copy of the series will be released before the new season arrives – a rare move for streaming shows.
Prime Video is working on two space opera series, The Captive’s War and Consider Phlebas. They’re also actively developing a reboot of Stargate. If Prime Video keeps creating compelling science fiction, it could become a top competitor to Apple TV in the sci-fi streaming space.
