Roastmaster General Brian Cox Cooks Johnny Depp and Kevin Spacey

As usual, whenever a day ends in ‘y’, veteran actor and new director Brian Cox is sharing his strong opinions on celebrities. While promoting his first feature film, Glenrothan, which stars himself and Alan Cumming, Cox gave a lengthy interview to The Times. They skillfully steered the conversation towards his thoughts on other well-known figures.

Brian Cox often complains about not getting enough recognition, which feels disingenuous considering how much he enjoys voicing strong opinions. Recently, he’s criticized several actors: he called Johnny Depp “overblown” and said he was glad to have passed on the governor role in the Pirates of the Caribbean films to Jonathan Pryce, and he dismissed Ian McKellen’s acting style as not to his liking. He also bluntly labeled Kevin Spacey “stupid,” a surprising comment given his previous defense of the actor. It’s unclear what changed his opinion. He even suggested Margot Robbie might be too beautiful to play Cathy in a film adaptation of Wuthering Heights, though he quickly walked that back. Interestingly, he defended Jeremy Strong, revealing that Strong actually asked him to stop talking about him – a request Cox found surprisingly sad. He ultimately admitted that Strong is a “wonderful actor.”

Of course he follows up with a subtly hostile comment about Strong. It’s Brian Cox, after all – what else would you expect?
