As a movie critic, I’ve always found science fiction to be a goldmine for truly memorable lines. It’s a genre that lets filmmakers explore the bizarre and fantastic, but at its heart, it’s often about us – about humanity’s journey, how we evolve with technology, and our place in the universe. Because of that focus on big ideas and challenges, sci-fi characters tend to deliver some incredibly powerful and insightful statements about the human condition.
As a huge sci-fi fan, I’ve always loved quotes that seem to predict the future, or just hit a little too close to home later on. But for me, one stands out above the rest. Everyone remembers the Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who asking for jelly babies or saying it’s okay to be childish, but his best line, I think, is one that’s always been true, but feels especially important these days.
The Fourth Doctor’s Quote From ‘Doctor Who’s “The Face of Evil” Is More Relevant Than Ever
While some Doctors in Doctor Who are known for being thoughtful and intense, Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor is often remembered as a more lighthearted and funny version of the character. Despite these differences, all Doctors are deeply committed to fairness and fighting for what’s right, no matter who or where it affects. In the fourth part of the classic story “The Face of Evil,” the Doctor has a difficult conversation with his future companion, Leela. What he says while trying to reassure her actually speaks to a much larger idea than just their immediate situation.
Both people with a lot of power and those who aren’t very bright share a similar habit: instead of changing their beliefs when faced with evidence, they twist the facts to match what they already think. This can be a problem for anyone who happens to be part of those ‘facts’ they’re changing.
In this situation, the Doctor is mainly trying to shield Leela and her people from a conflict with the Tesh and a powerful computer called Xoanon. However, the story goes deeper than that. Leela was banished from her tribe, the Savateem, for speaking out against Xoanon, which they worship as a god. Despite clear evidence of a problem, the Savateem refuse to acknowledge anything negative about Xoanon, and they turn against Leela simply because she challenges their beliefs. Tragically, Leela’s father even sacrifices himself to take a dangerous test in her place – a punishment for her questioning Xoanon.
A quote from the 1977 Doctor Who episode “The Face of Evil” feels surprisingly relevant today. It speaks to several current issues, including the spread of fake news, the rise of artificial intelligence, and the increasing marginalization of groups worldwide. Over the years, people’s sense of identity has been challenged as opinions are often presented as undeniable truths. While social media platforms have begun to use fact-checking to combat misinformation, these efforts often fall short.
It’s become clear to many of us that we can’t always trust what we hear, making it crucial to seek out knowledge for ourselves. A particularly striking part of this quote resonates with a lot of people, sadly. We’re seeing unfair blame placed on certain groups for problems around the world, and while this isn’t new, it’s definitely become much more common recently.
Recently, some have criticized Doctor Who for being too progressive, especially after the 60th anniversary specials in 2023. But that criticism misses the point – representing diverse experiences and telling unusual stories have always been central to what Doctor Who is about. From the very beginning, the show has explored new worlds and ideas. And in a universe as vast as the Whoniverse, the potential for imagination is limitless. If the Doctor consistently welcomes new cultures and ways of life, shouldn’t we all strive to do the same?
A quote from the Fourth Doctor, relevant even in 2026, reminds us to be mindful of how we interpret information. While not everything we read is false, it’s important to remember the difference between personal beliefs and actual facts. It’s good to be skeptical and question things, but even better to gather information from various sources instead of simply believing what you’re told. Having opinions is perfectly fine – and they can even be based on facts – but make sure those opinions are genuinely your own. Opinions are valuable, but when facing uncertainty, facts should take priority to avoid misunderstandings or unfairly damaging someone’s reputation.
Honestly, when I first heard the Doctor say this, it didn’t strike me as anything amazing. There are so many famous lines from sci-fi, some that really hit home and others that are just fun. But this quote, from the Fourth Doctor, is seriously underrated – and I think it’s actually the most important thing the Doctor has ever told us. It really stuck with me, and I don’t want it to be forgotten!
