I just finished watching ‘The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson’ on Netflix, and wow, it’s a really tough watch. It tells the story of Moriah, this incredibly talented cyclist whose life was tragically cut short, and they included interviews with her family and friends, which made it even more heartbreaking. One thing that struck me though? Kaitlin Armstrong isn’t interviewed in the documentary, which is pretty noticeable.
The documentary begins with an interview from Caitlin Cash, a close friend of Wilson. In May 2022, Wilson was staying with Cash in Austin, Texas, and spent the evening with Colin Strickland, a cyclist she had briefly dated.
When Cash got home, she discovered Wilson lying on the floor, badly injured and bleeding. She called 911 right away, and the Netflix documentary includes disturbing audio and video from the police responding to the emergency.
Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound. Investigators quickly determined Cash wasn’t involved, and their review of digital evidence surprisingly pointed to Kaitlin Armstrong as the person responsible.
Where is Kaitlin Armstrong now?

Kaitlin Armstrong, 38, is currently serving her sentence at the Dr. Lane Murray Unit, a women’s prison in Gatesville, Texas. According to prison records, she is not expected to be released until July 3, 2112.
In November 2023, a Texas jury convicted Armstrong of first-degree murder for the death of Wilson. She received a 90-year prison sentence, and will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
Despite an appeal from her lawyers, the Texas Third Court of Appeals confirmed her conviction in January 2026. After the ruling, District Attorney José Garza expressed continued sympathy for the family and friends of the victim, Moriah, in a statement reported by the Austin American-Statesman.
While defendants have a right to appeal, this process delays justice for everyone involved. We remain committed to ensuring the defendant faces consequences for their actions.
Why did Kaitlin Armstrong murder Moriah Wilson?

The documentary shows that Armstrong was primarily motivated by jealousy and insecurity in her relationship with Colin Strickland.
Strickland and the victim had a complicated relationship that had started and stopped multiple times. They had dated in 2021, broken up, and recently begun talking again.
On May 11, 2022, the night of the murder, the victim and Strickland went swimming and had dinner in Austin. Strickland told police he ignored a call from Armstrong during their date. He also revealed he’d saved Wilson’s number under a false name because Armstrong had previously checked his phone.

Strickland and Wilson had initially decided to just be friends. However, when Wilson visited Austin, Strickland wasn’t honest with his girlfriend, Armstrong, about where he was.
He texted her, saying he was driving back from Alison’s son’s house where he’d delivered flowers. His phone had died, and he was heading home unless she had any other ideas.
Around 8:30 PM that evening, Strickland left Wilson at Cash’s apartment. Security footage then captured a dark-colored vehicle arriving, and shortly after, around 9:15 PM, several gunshots were heard.
Investigators determined the SUV belonged to Armstrong and asked her to come in for questioning. While she was initially allowed to leave, police later concluded Strickland hadn’t been driving. They then tried to apprehend Armstrong, but discovered she had already left the country.

She fled to Costa Rica with a large amount of cash, leaving her phone behind. To avoid being caught, she traveled using her sister’s passport and drastically changed her looks – she cut and dyed her hair, and even had a nose job to look more like her sister.
She evaded capture for 43 days before being arrested on June 29, 2022, at a hostel near the beach. After her arrest, she was brought back to the United States to face trial, which ultimately resulted in her current imprisonment.
Where is Colin Strickland now?

Colin Strickland, 39, has mostly retired from professional cycling. Following his clearance as a suspect in 2022, he’s now building a more peaceful life in Texas, working on restoring vintage trailers and collectible cars.
Before Wilson passed away, Strickland was a prominent gravel racer, achieving victories in big races like Unbound Gravel and establishing himself as a successful independent cyclist.
Last year, Strickland told Cycling News that the experience was completely awful and a terrible waste. He immediately lost all interest in cycling, saying it felt like his life was falling apart.
I would never have allowed bike racing to happen, no matter what. It would have been incredibly damaging to my well-being, and I couldn’t have gone through with it. It felt like my world was shattered, and I’m still trying to process everything that happened.
I still don’t understand what happened, and I doubt I ever will – it’s incredibly painful for me. Strickland was the last person known to have seen Wilson before she died, and he testified in Armstrong’s trial, but he was never considered a suspect in her death.
In the Netflix documentary, he admits he wouldn’t have started cycling if it meant Wilson was still alive.
Some people interested in the case have wondered about his behavior before the murder, especially his choice to mislead Armstrong about where he was. However, police stated that while his actions might have been unethical, they didn’t break any laws.
Honestly, the guy never really got in trouble with the law over any of this. After everything went down, Strickland mostly stayed out of the public eye. He’s talked about it a few times, but you can tell he’s still working through it all, trying to make sense of what happened.
