Those eager for a third Batman movie directed by Matt Reeves were recently disheartened to learn about his upcoming projects.
Matt Reeves is set to direct and executive produce a new Apple TV series based on Tom Wolfe’s novel, The Bonfire of the Vanities. David E. Kelly will write the show, according to Variety.
Warner Bros. Television produces the show, with Sarah Geismer and Matthew Tinker serving as additional executive producers.
I first encountered The Bonfire of the Vanities as a series of articles in Rolling Stone back in 1984. Then, in 1987, Tom Wolfe expanded it into the novel we all know. A few years later, in 1990, Brian De Palma brought it to the big screen with an amazing cast including Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, and Morgan Freeman. It was quite a journey seeing this story unfold in different formats!
The movie follows Sherman McCoy, a Wall Street executive played by Tom Hanks, and his girlfriend, Maria (Melanie Griffith). After taking a wrong turn in the Bronx, Maria accidentally hits a young boy and they leave the scene without reporting it. When a sensationalist tabloid reporter named Peter Fallow (Bruce Willis) gets wind of the incident, he publishes a scandalous story that ignites public outrage and leads to a high-profile trial.
What does this mean for The Batman 3?
Keanu Reeves is preparing to film the sequel to The Batman in London this spring. Starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, the new movie is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027 – five years after the first film came out in 2022.
Most people anticipate Robert Pattinson’s Batman story will consist of three films. But with Matt Reeves now directing a show for Apple, it seems he won’t be making The Batman 3 immediately after the second movie. It’s unknown how long fans might have to wait for the next Batman film, but Reeves is clearly focusing on a different project before finishing his work in Gotham.
Recent reports suggested James Gunn was trying to speed up the release of The Batman 3. Apparently, he didn’t want two different Batman movies running concurrently – one being Matt Reeves’ darker take and the other, The Brave and the Bold, within the new DC Universe. However, Gunn has since stated that these reports are false.
James Gunn responded to a rumor about The Batman 3 on Threads, stating it wasn’t true. He clarified that while he doesn’t know if someone told David Zaslav the rumor, the rumor itself is inaccurate.
