Outlander Season 8, Episode 5 Recap & Discussion: Jamie Makes A Deal With The Devil

Episode 5 of Outlander season 8, titled “Send for the Devil,” is packed with action and drama. Jamie and Captain Cunningham finally clash, leading to a full-blown conflict on Fraser’s Ridge. Meanwhile, Roger becomes involved in the Siege of Savannah while Brianna nervously awaits his return at Lord John’s home. The episode also moves William’s investigation into his cousin Ben’s death forward, and introduces Benjamin Cleveland to the Fraser’s Ridge community, giving viewers plenty to follow.

As a huge fan, I’ve been on the edge of my seat watching Jamie deal with Captain Cunningham! Last season, we saw Jamie find out Cunningham was building up a Loyalist army right here on Fraser’s Ridge. Cunningham even tried to get Jamie on his side, but Jamie started gathering his own men instead. He really didn’t want to work with someone as ruthless as Benjamin Cleveland, but heading into the latest episode, Jamie gets some shocking news about Cunningham’s plans. It’s gotten so serious that Jamie has no choice but to accept help from the devil himself – Benjamin Cleveland! It’s a really tense situation, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out.

Captain Cunningham Mounts An Attack On Jamie At Lodge Night

Okay, let me tell you about the latest Outlander episode. Things get really tense right from the start! A man named Mr. Whitaker, whose twins Claire helped deliver, arrives at Fraser’s Ridge with some seriously bad news for Jamie. He was out hunting with the Cherokee and overheard some unsettling plans. Apparently, these guys were trying to get the Cherokee to join Ferguson’s militia, and they let slip that Cunningham is going to take over Fraser’s Ridge – meaning Jamie’s days as the leader are numbered. Whitaker basically warns Jamie that an attack is coming, and trust me, he’s spot on. It’s a chilling setup for what’s to come!

Jamie believes Cunningham will strike immediately following their Lodge meeting. He quickly assembles his men, and while they finish praying at the church, he slips away into the woods. There, he and his men identify and record the names of those tenants who support Cunningham. They don’t plan to physically hurt anyone, but these tenants will almost certainly be evicted later in the story of Outlander.

Cunningham and Jamie face off at the trading post, but the encounter ends badly for both of them. Cunningham believed he was invincible, as his dead son had told him they wouldn’t meet again for seven years. However, Cunningham didn’t anticipate being permanently wounded.

Cunningham’s Fate In Outlander Season 8, Episode 5, Explained

At first, Cunningham intended to simply capture Jamie and take him to Ferguson for execution. But when Jamie resisted, a full-blown fight erupted between them. Cunningham fought with reckless confidence, making him a formidable opponent. He almost killed Jamie, but Buck arrived just in time, shooting Cunningham in the back and stopping him.

Jamie and Buck brought the injured Cunningham to Claire, who examined him and determined he might be permanently unable to walk. While she successfully removed the bullet, and there’s a chance his spine could heal, Claire doesn’t seem optimistic about his recovery. It’s unclear what the long-term consequences will be for Cunningham. Although disabling Cunningham and exposing his men offers Jamie some relief on the Ridge, he understands Cunningham was just working for Ferguson, meaning the larger threat remains.

Roger Survives The Siege Of Savannah & Is Reunited With Brianna

In the fourth episode of Outlander season 8, Roger went to the Continental Army camp near Savannah hoping to get weapons and assistance for Fraser’s Ridge. But he found himself stuck when the soldiers began preparing for the Battle of Savannah, a historical event that occurred in 1779. Roger realizes the Continental Army is likely to lose, but he feels compelled to stay and participate, believing he has a role to play in the larger conflict.

It’s not yet known what Roger’s actions in the battle will mean in the long run, but he definitely rescues at least one person. He carries a young drummer boy to safety, entrusting him to Rachel’s brother, Denzell Hunter, before returning to the fight to help others. He’s then thrown back by an explosion, which triggers a vivid memory from his childhood – a similar disaster where he was saved by an unknown man.

No matter the outcome of the battle, Roger makes it through. Unable to wait for news at Lord John’s, Brianna goes to the Continental Camp hoping to find out what happened, and she and Roger are happily reunited. William accompanied Brianna, which was lucky for him, as the trip allowed him to finally get some answers he’d been searching for.

William Discovers That His Cousin Is Alive & With The Continental Army

Throughout the eighth season of Outlander, William has been trying to find out what really happened to his cousin, Benjamin Grey. Officially, Ben, who was a British soldier, died of an illness while held prisoner by the rebels. But when William investigated, he discovered someone else was buried in Ben’s grave, leading him to suspect his cousin might still be alive. Ultimately, without further proof, William had to stop searching.

William’s fears are proven right when he spots Ben at the Continental Army camp, now going by the name General Bleeker and wearing a Rebel uniform. Initially, William is overjoyed to find Ben alive, but he soon realizes the truth: Ben deliberately made everyone believe he was dead. He abandoned his wife and son and is now fighting with the enemy. William is furious about this betrayal, and things are even more complicated by the fact that he recently had a passionate encounter with Ben’s widow. This discovery is sure to fuel William’s anger.

What Benjamin Cleveland’s Arrival At Fraser’s Ridge Means For Outlander Season 8

The latest episode of Outlander season 8 brought Benjamin Cleveland to Fraser’s Ridge. Jamie had requested Cleveland’s help before the disastrous Lodge Night, hoping he’d arrive in time to fight alongside him against Cunningham. While that didn’t happen, Jamie still wants Cleveland as an ally. With ongoing conflicts in the area, and knowing the Battle of King’s Mountain is coming, Jamie understands he and Cleveland are destined to fight together—even if it means they both won’t survive.

Jamie was shocked to learn from Frank’s book that he’d be forced to work with Cleveland. Although they’re both fighting against the British, Cleveland is a cruel and violent man, and Jamie and Claire won’t be happy having him at Fraser’s Ridge. However, it’s becoming clear that Jamie may have to make difficult alliances – even with people he despises – if he wants to protect his home and family from threats like Cunningham. The eighth season of Outlander is steadily leading Jamie toward the coming conflict, and having an ally like Cleveland might at least help keep Fraser’s Ridge safe.
