The Super Mario Bros. Movie has had a fantastic opening weekend at the box office, and here’s a look at all the records it’s broken.
Okay, so the Super Mario Bros. Movie totally blew up at the box office! It made a whopping $1.361 billion, which is insane when you consider it only cost around $100 million to make. As a gamer, it’s awesome to see a video game adaptation do so well!
The movie quickly became the most successful video game adaptation ever made, one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, and a major blockbuster, ranking among the top 15 highest-grossing movies ever.
The popular creative team, known as ‘The Bros,’ returned for the new film, and the addition of stars like Glenn Powell, Brie Larson, and Donald Glover helped ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ have a very successful opening weekend.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie launched on April 1st and earned an impressive $68.4 million globally.
That’s slightly more than the opening day earnings of the previous movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which brought in $66.4 million in 2023 (not accounting for inflation).
Galaxy had a slightly higher production cost than Bros., reportedly around $110 million.
Deadline reports that the movie sequel is expected to earn $160 million in the U.S. and $350 million globally during its first five days in theaters.
Global box office that’s out of this world
A recent article in Deadline highlighted the strong international box office numbers for Galaxy, which is encouraging news for Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Pictures.
The latest film earned $6.7 million in Mexico on its opening day, marking Universal’s biggest opening ever in that country. This is a promising sign, as the first film began with $5.9 million in Mexico and eventually grossed an impressive $101 million there. Globally, the original film performed exceptionally well, earning the third-highest total revenue after the United States and Japan.
The film debuted with $4.3 million in the UK and Ireland, and $3.8 million in Germany – marking the biggest animated opening ever for the country, and significantly exceeding the first-week earnings of Bros. by $1 million.
Okay, so Spain absolutely crushed it with a $3 million opening weekend – that’s the third biggest debut ever there, only beaten by Twilight and Inside Out 2! France wasn’t far behind, launching with a really strong $2.9 million too. Pretty awesome numbers all around!
