Dan Simpson, 68, was surprised and delighted when a simple act of kindness for a customer resulted in an unexpectedly large ‘tip.’
For the past 14 years, Simpson has balanced a full-time job with the Idaho Department of Agriculture and part-time driving for Domino’s Pizza. He’s planning to retire in a few weeks.
On Friday, March 27th, a Domino’s customer ordered a two-liter bottle of Diet Coke with their pizza. Unfortunately, that size of Diet Coke wasn’t available at the store. The employee, Simpson, tried calling the customer to offer a different drink, but couldn’t reach them.
Instead of not having the soda, Simpson quickly went across the street to a convenience store, bought it, and delivered the order to a man named Brian Wilson in West Boise.
A Ring camera owned by Wilson recorded Simpson explaining how he purchased the Diet Coke. Wilson was clearly surprised, exclaiming to the driver, “You really didn’t have to do that! Is there a way to increase your tip? You deserve more than that amount.”
Although Wilson was short on money and Simpson didn’t want an extra tip, they both received much more than just a small amount of money in the end.
Delivery driver’s act of kindness sparks massive fundraiser
Wilson’s wife, Katey Ann, shared the video on TikTok, and it quickly became popular. By Monday, it had already been viewed over 325,000 times, and as of April 2nd, that number had grown to 2.3 million.
So, after seeing how awesome that delivery driver was, everyone online told me I should start a GoFundMe for him, and I did! As of right now, we’ve raised $32,000 out of our $35,000 goal – it’s amazing to see the support!
We were truly amazed by everyone’s generosity,” Wilson shared on the GoFundMe page. “It’s unusual to see such caring and kindness these days.
He explained in a statement to the Idaho Statesman that the situation was a powerful reminder of the kindness and generosity that still exists in the world, with people willing to help others just because they want to.
Okay, so I just heard this amazing story! Apparently, a woman named Katey Ann actually talked to ‘Dan the Man’ on the phone! It happened after she and her husband went to the Domino’s where he works – they dropped off a retirement card and a little tip for him. How cool is that?!
She described him as completely overwhelmed with gratitude and very modest. Dan isn’t tech-savvy, but he’s incredibly thankful for everyone’s support. We’ll continue to share updates on this effort to help Dan, as he truly deserves it!
Simpson’s simple act of kindness is especially touching because the Wilsons have trouble seeing, making it difficult for them to go out and get what they need.
Brian explained that what seemed like a small fix for him actually had a significant impact on our side.
