Please be aware that this article contains spoilers for Invincible season 4, episode 5, “Give Us a Moment.” Invincible stands out as a truly original superhero series, boasting excellent writing and compelling characters. From the very beginning, the show hasn’t hesitated to portray intense violence, and it’s only become more graphic as the story has unfolded.
Mark Grayson has survived many life-threatening fights, but his battle with Conquest at the end of Invincible season 3 was particularly brutal. Their recent rematch was even more difficult to watch, and included what many fans are calling the show’s most disturbing scene so far – which is fitting, considering Conquest’s merciless nature.
Before Mark could fight the Viltrumite, Oliver stepped up to challenge Conquest. Though Oliver managed to land some good hits at first, he quickly found himself overwhelmed. He wasn’t strong or experienced enough to compete with an opponent like Conquest, and nearly suffered the same devastating defeat as characters from earlier seasons.
Conquest Vs. Oliver Almost Repeated Red Rush’s Brutal Death At The Hands Of Omni-Man
Oliver initially held his own against Conquest, but it was expected that the more powerful Viltrumite would soon take over. He seemed ready to finish off the youngest Grayson, mirroring a brutal attack from the past. The first episode of Invincible famously showed Omni-Man suddenly and violently killing all the members of the Guardians of the Globe, and this current fight felt very similar.
The battle saw Nolan deliver several harsh blows, but Red Rush faced the most devastating outcome. Trying to attack Omni-Man, Red Rush was instead seized by the head. Omni-Man then squeezed with immense force, crushing Red Rush’s head in his hands.
Things were even more difficult for Red Rush because time seemed to move much slower for him than for everyone else. This was especially true considering his past as the Guardian. Later, in season 4, Oliver found himself in a terrifyingly similar situation – trapped by Conquest and with his skull being crushed, just like before.
It was awful watching Oliver, like Red Rush, throwing everything he had at his opponent, trying to land a hit. He just couldn’t break through, and I could see the strain – his eyes and nose started bleeding. Thankfully, Omni-Man showed up when he did, because Oliver was seriously about to be defeated.
This scene likely showed Oliver realizing he’s outmatched, as he’s the least powerful member of the Coalition of Planets and faces a tough battle ahead. Interestingly, it also strongly echoed the way Red Rush died, a connection that adds a surprising amount of depth.
Omni-Man Saving His Son Shows His Journey Has Come Full Circle
Omni-Man proved he’s far from a perfect father by almost killing his son in the season 1 finale of Invincible. However, his decision to save Oliver showed significant growth. Throughout the episode, he also tried to make amends for his past, even apologizing to those he’d harmed, like Art and Debbie.
While Nolan had clearly begun to change, he didn’t fully understand the harm he’d caused, which is why people weren’t responding as he hoped. His willingness to protect his son, though, showed how far he’d come and proved he was no longer a villain, even if he could never completely atone for his past mistakes.
It really struck me how Oliver just didn’t want his dad’s help, didn’t seem to even recognize it, but honestly, that’s the only reason he’s still around. It wasn’t about Omni-Man wanting thanks or anything; he saved Oliver because he loves his son and couldn’t bear to lose him. It’s such a different approach than how he acted towards Mark in the first season – that coldness is gone, replaced by pure paternal instinct.
The fact that Nolan was saving people from this terrible fate, instead of causing it, further proves he’s truly trying to make up for his past actions. Before, he was a dedicated Viltrumite who would kill anyone – even his allies, the original Guardians of the Globe – simply because it was his duty to the Empire.
He’s now battling those he once considered allies, driven by a desire to protect innocent people and showing how much he’s changed. The interaction between Oliver and Conquest perfectly illustrates his development, solidifying Omni-Man’s place as one of the most compelling characters in Invincible.
