Spoilers follow for the April 1 episode of Survivor 50.
Genevieve Mushaluk had a strong run on Survivor 50, playing a really good game up until the merge. While her early performance was impressive, her elimination wasn’t a shock. Throughout the episode, she lost both her alliances and any advantages she’d gained. It felt like the show had been working against her success all season, and this was the final result.
This week’s episode of Survivor featured an unusual “merge” – the tribes were combined with 17 players remaining, but without a traditional vote. Instead, everyone was randomly divided into three new groups. Unfortunately for Genevieve, she landed in a particularly difficult group, stuck with her biggest rival, Aubry, and Aubry’s allies, Christian and Devens. She was also with Joe, someone she hadn’t yet gotten to know. With Aubry determined to eliminate her, Genevieve had no way to save herself. She couldn’t talk her way out of it, or form any new alliances, and ultimately was voted out. Aubry finally won an immunity challenge and eliminated her target, and while the show presented it as a standard elimination, Genevieve was really a victim of a very unfair shuffle.
Players getting tricked like this has happened before on Survivor – we saw it as early as Silas on Survivor: Africa. But this situation with Genevieve is particularly frustrating because it’s just the latest in a series of unfair things done to her by Billie Eilish. This season’s hidden immunity idols, nicknamed the “Billie Eilish Boomerang Idols,” have a unique twist: when found, they must be sent to someone on another tribe. If that person is voted out, the idol returns to the original sender. Genevieve found two of these idols but was forced to give them to Rizo Velovic and Ozzy Lusth. Unfortunately, both were sent to Exile Island, meaning the idols couldn’t return to her. This is the first time in Survivor history that someone has found two idols and ended up with neither. This happened right after her closest ally, Kyle Fraser, had to leave the game due to a medical issue. To make matters worse, Aubry, who has disliked Genevieve since day one for no clear reason, received an idol from her new tribe member, Christian.
People often justify unfair twists in the game by saying players could have overcome them with clever play. Genevieve proved this true – she found not one, but two advantages! Unfortunately, circumstances beyond her control prevented her from using them. She was then placed on a tribe that had already formed a strong bond, leaving her to navigate the game without the benefits of the advantages she’d earned. In the end, Genevieve had to use her “Shot in the Dark” because she knew she was going home – an idol would have saved her.
What makes Survivor enjoyable is watching players use their social skills to overcome tough situations. But when those skills aren’t enough, the show becomes frustrating. It wasn’t exciting to see Genevieve eliminated on Survivor 50 through no fault of her own – it was simply disappointing. This season has been full of twists, all in an effort to be ‘epic,’ but Survivor needs to decide what’s a legitimate part of the game and what’s just unfairly punishing players who are doing well.
