Okay, so John Woo’s Silent Night, which came out in 2023, is finally hitting a streaming service this month! If you, like me, missed it in theaters, or just want to watch it again, it’s a great chance to check out the latest from the director of Face/Off. I’m excited to finally be able to watch it from the comfort of my couch!
The full lineup of new releases is out, and it shows that Silent Night will be available to stream on April 29th. In the meantime, action fans can enjoy several movies added earlier this month, including the 2024 action thriller The Beekeeper starring Jason Statham, and the sci-fi blockbuster Pacific Rim Uprising.
John Woo Returned to Direct Silent Night After 2 Decades
Following his 2023 film Paycheck, director John Woo returned after two decades with Silent Night. This action movie is unique because it has no dialogue—a fact reflected in its title. The film tells the story of a father seeking revenge for his son’s murder by a gang on Christmas Eve. The father was also injured in the drive-by shooting, leaving him unable to speak throughout the entire film.
Joel Kinnaman, known for his roles in Suicide Squad and For All Mankind, stars in Silent Night as Brian Godlock, a father seeking revenge. The film also features Kid Cudi, Harold Torres, and Catalina Sandino Moreno, and was written by Robert Archer Lynn.
Silent Night Was Divisive With Critics
The movie received mixed reactions – some people loved it, while others didn’t. It has a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, barely avoiding a negative score, and audiences are equally split with a 50% approval rate. This response isn’t surprising for an unusual film, especially a violent action thriller with no dialogue. However, Kinnaman was immediately drawn to the unique vision behind Silent Night.
John Woo is a true master filmmaker, especially known for his action movies. He brilliantly captured both the emotional depth of the story – the family tragedy and its setup – and delivered incredibly exciting, fast-paced action. Few directors are as skilled as Mr. Woo at combining these elements.
When asked about the most challenging scene to film, he said the stair sequence was particularly intense. He believes it’s one of the best action scenes ever made, and filming it was physically demanding, taking several days and leaving him exhausted.
Silent Night starts streaming on Hulu on Apr. 29, 2026.
