A man in Japan famously married a virtual pop star named Hatsune Miku in 2018, and now he’s getting attention again for encouraging fans around the world to do the same.
Akihiko Kondo gained attention for having a wedding ceremony at home with Hatsune Miku, using a doll to represent the virtual character.
Although this marriage isn’t legally recognized in Japan, it took place through a service that lets fans have make-believe wedding ceremonies with characters from fiction.
So, Kondo has talked about how his connection with Miku really helped him through tough times, and he’s been a big voice for what he calls ‘fictional love’ ever since. Now, he’s actually telling fans outside of Japan to go for it and ‘marry’ their waifus – the characters they’re really into! It’s pretty wild, but I get where he’s coming from.
Hatsune Miku’s husband wants others to find plastic love
Kondo recently spoke directly to anime fans worldwide on X (formerly Twitter), discussing the experience of falling in love with characters from fiction.
Hi everyone! I’m Akihiko Kondo, and you might remember me as the guy who had a wedding ceremony with Hatsune Miku back in 2018. It was at my place, and it was a pretty big deal for me.
While it isn’t legally binding, Japan allows people to have wedding ceremonies with characters from anime, video games, and other fictional media. I think it’s a fun idea – why not consider having a ceremony with your favorite character?
I was so fascinated to hear about Kondo and his wedding! It all happened thanks to a company called Gatebox, which used to do these fun things like create ‘marriage certificates’ for virtual characters. Sadly, Gatebox doesn’t offer that service anymore, but Kondo’s story is still the one everyone talks about when they discuss people forming real-life connections with characters they feel close to – it’s a really famous example of a parasocial relationship becoming something more.
Hello everyone! My name is Akihiko Kondo, and I held a wedding ceremony with Hatsune Miku, my beloved virtual singer, back in 2018. While this isn’t a legally recognized marriage in Japan, it is possible to have a wedding ceremony with anime, game, or other characters. I wholeheartedly support anyone who wants to marry their favorite character, so please consider doing so!

His recent post has quickly become a topic of conversation online, with some fans excited about the concept and others saying they’d like to try it too.
One person left a comment saying they think I’m a popular figure online and really appreciate how much I care about my favorite character. They also wished me happiness.
Inspired by Kondo, one fan shared their own ambitious goal: “I’m determined to make my favorite character happy, and this year I’m planning to actually marry them – in Japan!”
It’s not unusual for fans to express their passion for fictional characters in real life. Recently, a woman gained attention for spending almost $1,000 on a symbolic ‘marriage’ to a video game character, and a man transformed his house into a dedicated shrine for an anime character.
