The “Second Greatest Movie of All Time,” ‘The Godfather,’ Lands New Streaming Home

A highly acclaimed movie, often considered one of the best ever made, is now available to stream for free this April, along with its two follow-up films. While everyone has their favorite, this movie consistently ranks among the top choices, and is even known as the ‘second-greatest’ on IMDb.

According to IMDb user ratings, The Shawshank Redemption is widely considered the best movie ever made. It’s consistently ranked #1 on the site’s Top 250 list, boasting a 9.3 rating from over 3.2 million voters. This adaptation of Stephen King’s work, directed by Frank Darabont, is a truly timeless and beloved classic.

As a huge movie buff, I’m always checking those ‘greatest films’ lists, and The Godfather consistently lands right near the top – it’s usually number two! It has an incredible 9.2 rating based on over 2.2 million votes. Just behind it is Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight with 9.1. The Godfather, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, kicks off a fantastic trilogy that really dives into the story of the Corleone family. It’s based on Mario Puzo’s novel, and he even co-wrote the screenplay, which is one reason why so many people consider it one of the most important and influential films ever made.

‘The Godfather’ Set the Standard for Every Crime Drama After It

You can now watch The Godfather and its sequels for free on Pluto TV! The films boast an incredible cast, and the first movie stars Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, the head of a powerful family. After an attempt on his life, his son, Michael (Al Pacino), unexpectedly becomes involved in the dangerous world of the mafia.

Throughout the movie, Michael transforms from a naive newcomer into a ruthless boss, determined to protect his family’s power. Once Vito hands over control to his son, things change dramatically as Michael steers the Corleone family into a more dangerous future.

Featuring a stellar cast including James Caan, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall, Sterling Hayden, and Diane Keaton, The Godfather is an epic story about family, devotion, and the things people give up for those they love. It essentially created the formula for modern crime dramas, influencing hits like Goodfellas and The Sopranos.

Did ‘The Godfather’ Saga Go One Movie Too Far?

With scores of 97% and 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Godfather and The Godfather Part II clearly live up to their legendary status. However, The Godfather Part III received a much lower score of 66%. This significant drop in quality has led many to wonder if a third movie was even necessary, as it follows an older Michael Corleone attempting to make his family’s business legitimate.

Francis Ford Coppola wasn’t initially enthusiastic about directing the third Godfather film. After his movie One from the Heart wasn’t successful, he needed to direct it to cover his financial losses. The story became unnecessarily complex, casting his daughter, Sofia, in a role also drew criticism, and it was clear Coppola wasn’t fully invested. Ultimately, the film felt like a letdown and disappointed many viewers.

While The Godfather Part III may not be a perfect conclusion to the series, it still provides closure. Don’t miss the entire trilogy – all three films are currently available to stream on Pluto TV.
