Raoul Bhaneja, from Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, discusses which of Captain Nahla Ake’s (Holly Hunter) students he’d accept into the War College and teases what viewers can expect in season two. Bhaneja’s character, Commander Zeeren Kelrec, is the Chancellor of the War College and often works with – and competes against – Chancellor Ake.
The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy saw heartbreaking losses at the War College, including the deaths of promising Vulcan cadet B’Avi (played by Alexander Eling) and instructor Lieutenant Tomov (Jeff Teravainen). Additionally, Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner) was reassigned to Starfleet Academy following a traumatic experience in the sixth episode of the series.
Raoul Bhaneja appeared on the Virtual Trek Con podcast, The Main Viewer, to chat about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy with hosts Ryan T. Husk, Malissa Longo, Matt Boardman, and John Orquiola from ScreenRant. After saying his top pick for the War College would be Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Raoul responded to a question from John about which student from Captain Ake’s academy he’d choose as a replacement for Tarima.
Raoul Bhaneja believes losing Tarima highlights why she needed to attend the War College in the first place – to learn discipline and control. He feels putting her in a similar, dangerous situation again wouldn’t be wise, especially considering her sacrifice to save others. The Federation likely wouldn’t want to risk traumatizing their skilled Betazoid diplomat again, making Tarima’s loss particularly difficult.
You know, I think Darem has the potential to really thrive at the War College. He’s got that natural confidence and definitely enjoys a good fight. But honestly, as of the end of season one, he’s still a bit raw. He lets his emotions get the better of him and isn’t quite disciplined enough yet. I think Kelrec sees that, though. He’s thinking long-term – a four-year plan. He’d probably focus on reigning Darem in and building that discipline during his second year if Darem makes it through the first.
Season one is quite intense, especially for the War College cadets. There’s a lot of sacrifice and trauma, including cadets risking their lives and Lieutenant Tomov tragically dying while trying to protect his students. It’s a really difficult time for everyone at the War College.
Raoul Bhaneja discussed what fans can anticipate for Commander Kelrec in the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, being careful not to reveal any key plot details.
Raoul Bhaneja confirmed that Kelrec will appear in the second season. He felt the character’s development and the situations he faced were compelling, and he believes the show had potential for a four-season run. The planned arc would have focused on the cadets’ growth, showing them evolve from newcomers to potential future Starfleet captains like Janeway and Kirk. By the end of a four-season story, viewers might have seen real potential in these young characters, and that was the intended direction of the show.
It was also great to see how our characters – Tig, Gina, and mine – developed throughout the season. I’m really happy that Kelrec continues to be part of the story in season two, and that he’s facing new challenges compared to season one. It’s a lot of fun to build on the character and explore different sides of him, and I think viewers will enjoy seeing that.

George Hawkins, known as Darem Reymi, has a lot of promise, and Raoul Bhaneja sees it. Though Darem is quick to anger and needs focus, Raoul believes he can teach him discipline and even use his temper to make him a stronger fighter.
Reymi is a talented and motivated cadet who would likely succeed at the War College if he transferred. However, he wouldn’t be happy attending the same academy as Kyle, who is also pursuing a romantic relationship with Jay-Den Kraag, the person Darem is interested in.
Raoul Bhaneja, who plays Chancellor Kelrec, will return for the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Noga Landau, an executive producer and co-showrunner, revealed that the War College will play a significant role in the upcoming season. Series creator Gaia Violo also shared their enthusiasm for Bhaneja, stating they greatly enjoy working with him as both an actor and a person.
Unfortunately, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has been cancelled after two seasons, meaning we won’t see the cadets and instructors continue their training. However, the new series Starfleet Academy: War College offers an interesting contrast, and the developing relationship between Captain Ake and Commander Kelrec is a standout part of the show.
It’ll be really interesting to see the challenges Chancellor Kelrec faces and what’s next for the War College in the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
