The bosses are one of the most iconic parts of the Borderlands games. The series has always featured plenty of challenging boss battles, and Borderlands 4 continues that tradition with some of its most difficult fights yet.
Borderlands 4 and its DLCs feature over 40 different bosses you can fight, giving you lots of opportunities to farm for loot. But be warned – they’re not all pushovers! Even with a strong character build, some of these bosses can be surprisingly tough and defeat you quickly.
These bosses are challenging and often skipped by players, but they offer valuable rewards for those who can defeat them. Here’s a look at some of the toughest bosses in Borderlands 4.
10. Rippa Roadbirds
Dealing With Three Bosses

The Rippa Roadbirds are bosses you’ll encounter in the Carcadia Burn area of Kairos. They’re located in Saw’s Clench, specifically at the Ripper Drill Site in the northern Ruined Sumplands.
This boss battle is challenging because you face three enemies simultaneously: Baby Grunt, Lil’ Grunt, and Gruntabulous Vork. These bosses only appear after you’ve already completed the Ripper Drill Site, meaning you’ll likely be short on ammo and exhausted from the previous fight.
The Rippa Roadbirds aren’t flashy fighters, but they’re surprisingly tough. There are a lot of them on screen at once, they’re constantly moving, making them hard to target, and their smoke trails are incredibly dangerous – staying in one for even a second can instantly defeat you.
9. Idolator Sol
Invulnerable
Idolator Sol is likely the first of the Timekeeper’s Commanders you’ll encounter in Borderlands 4’s story. Don’t underestimate him – his fight includes several challenging mechanics that can quickly defeat you.
At the beginning of the fight, he often creates fishing rods, and one of them will have a green canister attached. You need to quickly grab that canister and throw it at the boss to make him take damage. If you miss, he’ll be impossible to defeat.
As the battle continues, he summons numerous enemies to help him and constantly changes the battlefield. You’ll need to dodge frequently to survive, because getting caught in his storm clouds is almost always fatal.
8. Vile Lictor
So Many Hands
If you choose to fight the commanders in a certain order, you might face Vile Lictor first, which could be challenging. He’s often more frustrating to fight than Idolator Sol because of his multiple arms and unpredictable attacks that force you to constantly watch your surroundings.
In the first stage of the fight, Lictor creates walls you’ll need to dodge – getting hit by them too many times can knock you off the arena. You’ll also need to target specific areas to make him vulnerable to attack.
Once Lictor enters his second phase, he can plant a large bomb. If you’re hit by it, you’ll be instantly defeated due to slow reaction time.
7. Skyspanner Kratch
Flying Enemies Are Annoying
Flying enemies are notoriously difficult, and the Skyspanner Kratch, found in The Lambent Mines, is no exception. This boss can be frustrating at any point in the game because it’s very durable, constantly moves around, and the arena itself is awkward to navigate.
The arena has a central spot that will instantly defeat your character, so it’s best to stay away from the middle. Also, the boss regularly sends out balloon-like enemies that explode on contact.
This boss constantly forces you to split your focus. You’ll always be looking away from the main threat to deal with other enemies, leaving you vulnerable to attacks from both them and the boss. It’s a losing battle because your attention is never fully on what matters.
6. Sludgemaw
Threshers Are Worse
Flying enemies can be frustrating, but Threshers are often even worse. Sludgemaw is a particularly annoying Thresher boss because it frequently burrows underground, making it hard to fight.
Sludgemaw repeatedly ducks underground and then quickly reappears to attack, making it difficult to hit him. This frustrating pattern has led many players to consider him one of the most annoying bosses in the game.
Okay, so he’s probably not the strongest on the list, but honestly, dealing with him is just so frustrating! He’s always moving and dodging, which makes him way harder to actually hit. Because of that, I think he deserves to be ranked higher than people give him credit for.
5. Shadowpelt
Invisibility
Dealing with an invisible opponent is always more frustrating than fighting one that just flies, and Shadowpelt specializes in disappearing. When its shield is up, Shadowpelt becomes invisible, making it hard to hit and letting it move freely around the battlefield.
After you break through Shadowpelt’s shield, it will keep attacking and dodging around the cave. If you don’t defeat it quickly, it will become invisible once more.
Shadowpelt is one of the most frustrating and challenging bosses players face, and most try to avoid fighting him if possible.
4. Axemaul
The Axes
If you struggle to attack quick-moving opponents, Axemaul might be frustrating. Like many beast bosses, he constantly runs around the battlefield.
Axemaul attacks by throwing its axe from afar. Because it’s small and the screen is often filled with bright effects, the axe can be hard to spot before it hits you.
Okay, so Axemaul is really annoying. It’s always moving and loves chucking its axe, which can quickly wipe you out if you’re not ready. Honestly, I find having a speedy character like Rafa makes dealing with it way easier. You need to be able to dodge those axe throws!
3. Inceptus
Welcome to the Jungle
Inceptus is easily one of the most impressive bosses in Borderlands 4. Gearbox did a fantastic job with both the boss’s design and how challenging the fight is.
Inceptus is a quick attacker, making it hard to dodge its strikes. It also uses many area-of-effect attacks, and has a phase where it becomes invincible, forcing you to constantly fly or risk being damaged by dangerous liquid on the ground.
This boss fight is lengthy, and you’ll likely die repeatedly if you don’t come prepared.
2. Timekeeper
The Final Boss
The Timekeeper is the last boss you’ll face in Borderlands 4, and he’s a real challenge. The fight happens in two parts: first, you battle him as the Timekeeper, which is relatively easier. Then, he transforms into a much tougher enemy – a Primordial Guardian.
In the second stage of the fight, the Timekeeper gets considerably harder to beat. He can quickly toss you around the arena and skillfully avoid your attacks.
The Timekeeper has a frustrating attack where it electrifies the ground. You have to carefully swing between floating platforms using your grappling hook to avoid getting shocked. If you fall, you instantly lose the game.
1. Bloomreaper
The Invincible
Bloomreaper is a brand new, incredibly tough enemy in Borderlands 4 – and it’s currently the hardest boss players can face. Defeating it requires mastering several challenging mechanics, including destroying crystals, avoiding incoming attacks, and navigating a complex arena.
Breaking the crystals lets you hurt the boss, but be careful! It will immediately respond by filling the arena with spikes, forcing you to move to the platforms underneath.
The most frustrating part of fighting this boss is definitely its attack that instantly ends your entire run. It’s no surprise players dislike it – even the developers at Gearbox have acknowledged the issue.
