Nintendo is holding a bowling tournament across the country for older adults, and it’s surprisingly competitive.
The Senior Bowling Tournament 2026 is a Nintendo Switch Sports competition for players age 60 and up. Sixteen teams from across Japan – representing cities, towns, care organizations, and senior clubs – will be competing.
Despite seeming like a fun, casual get-together, it’s actually a serious competition where only the most skilled grandparents will win.
Switch Sports has never been so competitive
This isn’t just casual gaming, you know? A lot of these teams actually came together through Nintendo Switch classes and local tournaments. We’ve been grinding, meeting up regularly, and leveling up our skills, and now we’re representing our region – it’s a big deal!
I’ve seen some really cool programs where they’re using games to help seniors stay healthy and connected with each other. It’s awesome to see games being used to improve their well-being and keep them active – it’s way more than just entertainment, you know?
A team called “team3776” chose its name to represent Mount Fuji’s height, symbolizing their ambition to be the best in Japan. Other teams were created through local competitions and community gaming events, selecting their best players to compete for their region.

In Osaka, players from different areas have joined forces to create one team. Meanwhile, in Kyoto, volunteers are helping older adults learn the game.
Kirameki Club Chiba reported that Nintendo Switch games are a popular and accessible new hobby for seniors, helping them connect with others and stay active and positive.
I’ve noticed a cool thing happening lately. What started as just getting together with friends for some Switch gaming, whether at local classes or community centers, has really evolved. It’s become way more competitive than anyone expected! People are really getting into it and pushing each other to improve.
The tournament will be held online over several dates, continuing until mid-2026. Although there won’t be a live stream, recorded matches will be available to watch afterward.
It’s not surprising to see seniors enjoying video games – one 91-year-old recently completed Resident Evil Requiem using only handwritten notes! And a Street Fighter 6 tournament for players aged 40 and over gained attention when the prize turned out to be a blood pressure monitor.
