Supergirl 2026’s Trailer Uses An Iconic Zack Snyder DCEU Line (For A Good Reason)

As the summer blockbuster season begins, the biggest movies are starting to generate buzz. The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day quickly went viral, and DC Studios responded with a simultaneous reveal of new footage from Supergirl, set to release on June 26th. The trailer gives fans a better look at Kara Zor-El’s upcoming story, hinting that her adventure won’t be entirely lighthearted and shares thematic similarities with another DC film.

As a huge Superman fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the story of Krypton’s destruction – it’s such a core part of his origin. It’s interesting how, in most versions, Superman doesn’t really remember his life there, so he concentrates on building a life here on Earth and making the best of a really tough situation. The new movie, Superman, from James Gunn’s DC Universe, really leaned into that idea – it showed Superman realizing that who you admire isn’t about family ties, but about who they are as people. But Gunn also added a cool twist! His cousin, Kara, actually said a line from Man of Steel that General Zod originally said, which was a really neat callback for longtime fans like me.

What really gets to me about Kara Zor-El is her backstory. Unlike Superman, she actually lived on Krypton and witnessed its destruction, losing everyone she cared about. It’s this deep sense of loss that drives her, and she’s constantly haunted by what she’s lost. She even says, “I have no people,” which is incredibly powerful – it instantly reminded me of Zod’s famous speech in Man of Steel. It’s that same feeling of being utterly alone, the last of a civilization, and it really resonates.

Zod and Supergirl seem like complete opposites. Zod would have destroyed Earth to restore Krypton, while Supergirl simply wants to belong. However, they actually represent two sides of the same issue, hinting at how the new DC Universe will explore characters dealing with trauma in a fresh way.

Supergirl’s DCU Story Is a Much Deeper Take on the Krypton Tragedy

The movie Man of Steel presented Zod as a character you could almost understand. The leaders of Krypton didn’t prevent the planet’s destruction, which led Zod to try and take over. When that failed, he and his followers were banished to the Phantom Zone. However, they eventually escaped and headed to Earth, where they encountered Kal-El.

Okay, so Superman and Zod had a major disagreement – Zod wanted to essentially rebuild Krypton on Earth, and, unsurprisingly, Superman wasn’t having it. It led to a brutal fight, and when it became clear Zod wouldn’t stand down, Superman was forced to make a devastating choice. He stopped Zod, permanently. Honestly, it absolutely wrecked Superman to kill another Kryptonian, even a villain, but he truly believed it was the only way to protect Earth. It was a really tough moment, and you could feel the weight of that decision on him throughout the rest of the film.

As a huge DC fan, I’m really intrigued by what’s happening with Supergirl! It turns out Superman learned his parents actually sent him to Earth to conquer it and carry on their legacy. Now, it’s got me wondering if Kara’s parents had the same plans for her. It’s not confirmed yet, but the possibility is definitely there, and it’s a really interesting twist!

The way Supergirl is being promoted doesn’t suggest Kara has ever thought about restoring Krypton. She believes Krypton’s destruction was its own doing, and its people had their time. Even though she’s faced similar losses, she’s clearly much more level-headed than Zod was.

Kara might not realize she’s being too self-critical until late in the episode, but she’ll eventually figure it out. Getting a clearer perspective will be a huge advantage when she faces villains like Zod in the future DCU.
