Jason Statham Remake of Action Thriller Classic ‘The Mechanic’ Hits Free Streaming

He’s transforming into a highly skilled assassin in a fresh take on a classic 1970s action movie, now available on a new streaming service. The actor, often called ‘The Stath,’ has become a major action star, and he’s bringing his natural charisma and impressive fighting abilities to revive a long-dormant film series.

Originally released in 2011, The Mechanic is a modern update to the 1972 film of the same name, which starred Charles Bronson. Jason Statham takes on the role of Arthur Bishop, a professional hitman who expertly disguises his killings as accidents. The film, directed by Simon West, follows Bishop as he navigates a difficult situation after being forced to kill his friend and mentor, Harry. He then takes Harry’s son under his protection, trying to shield him from the truth surrounding his father’s death. The movie boasts a strong supporting cast, including Donald Sutherland, Ben Foster, and Tony Goldwyn, and even features an early appearance by John Wick director David Leitch, who shares a fight scene with Statham.

Jason Statham Versus David Leitch

Like the original film from the 70s, the new Mechanic received mixed reviews – critics gave it a 54% rating and audiences a 51%. However, it delivers exactly what fans expect from a Jason Statham movie: a secretive protagonist, thrilling action, inventive fight scenes, and a compelling supporting character brought to life by the talented Ben Foster, who adds surprising depth and tragedy to the role.

While fans wait for Jason Statham’s new action movies – like this year’s Mutiny, next year’s The Beekeeper 2, and the upcoming Jason Statham Stole My Bike directed by David Leitch (known for Hobbs & Shaw) – his older film The Mechanic is a great choice for action fans and is now available to stream for free on Pluto.

‘Mechanic’ Director Wants to Make Another Movie With Jason Statham

The sequel to The Mechanic, titled Mechanic: Resurrection, came out in 2016 and is now available to watch for free on Tubi. Although critics weren’t impressed, both films did well in theaters. The first Mechanic movie earned $76.1 million worldwide on a $40 million budget, and Resurrection performed even better, bringing in $125 million globally with a similar $40 million budget.

With the first Mechanic film doing well financially, fans are wondering if a sequel might happen. Director Simon West, who also directed The Expendables 2 and Wild Card with Jason Statham, recently told MovieWeb that he’d be very interested in working with Statham again and believes they’ll collaborate on another project someday, though there are no current plans for Mechanic 3.

I’ve worked with Jason on three films, and we always have a great time collaborating. We’re both really proud of those movies. So, when I come across a project, I often think he’d be perfect for it. If he’s available and interested in something new, we definitely discuss it. I’m confident we’ll work together again in the future, because we genuinely enjoy it – it just needs to be the right opportunity for both of us.
